After coming oh-so-achingly close to pulling off the massive win over Florida State, can Wake Forest come up with the giant win it needs to make a true national splash?

It’s been a good Demon Deacon team, but its best moment was … a blowout win over Boston College? The struggle to get by Appalachian State?  Nah. Again, the thing that stands out is that near-miss last week against the Seminoles.

The defensive front was amazing at getting into the FSU backfield, but it couldn’t hold in the fourth quarter. Even so, Wake Forest proved it was the real deal.

Clemson had a business-as-usual approach with a dominant 31-17 win over Virginia Tech that wasn’t even as close as the final score. As good as the Tigers have been, they’re going to be in for a fight against a team with the pass rush and confidence to potentially be the thorn in the side of the defending national champs.

Clemson has won eight in a row going back to the 2008 team, but Wake Forest hasn’t had the legitimate shot to pull off the win like it does this week.

One Reason Why Clemson Will Win

Will the Wake Forest offense be able to get things moving on the Tiger defense?

The Demon Deacons were able to move the ball a wee bit against Florida State – QB John Wolford had a nice day with 271 yards – but there wasn’t any rushing game, and there won’t be anything from the ground attack this week, either.

Clemson’s run defense has been a rock all season long, owning Auburn ground attack with too many plays behind the line – finishing giving up 38 net yards – and kept Lamar Jackson and Louisville to just 116 yards.

Last week, Virginia Tech managed to come up with a few nice runs, but couldn’t get anything going consistently. The Tiger defensive front owns the backfield, and after giving up two sack and ten tackles for loss, the Demon Deacon O line might be in trouble.

However …

One Reason Why Wake Forest Will Win

The Wake Forest defensive line is the real deal.

Clemson knows a little something about coming up with sacks and tackles for loss – ask Auburn – but the Demon Deacons were special last week with five sacks and 17 tackles for loss. Florida State’s offensive line is having a problem, but still – that’s Florida State.

As good as Clemson QB Kelly Bryant has been, will he be able to put up big yards and get comfortable against this group? The Tigers will give up sacks and they’ll allow plays behind the line from time to time. Now they have to deal with the No. 1 team in the nation in tackles for loss.

There’s a shot to pull this off if the Demon Deacons can own the field position, dominate the punting game, and hope the D can do the rest.

What’s Going To Happen

Many will think Wake Forest might just be good enough to dethrone the defending national champ – and it is. But it won’t happen this week.

On the road against a killer defensive front, the Wake Forest offense won’t go anywhere and, like it did against FSU, will once again have problems closing out drives with touchdowns.

How did Bryant do under the pressure of the Auburn defensive front? 19-of-25 for 181 yards with 59 rushing yards and two scores. He’ll be fine.

The Clemson offensive line isn’t Florida State’s. The Tigers will once again show why they’re the class of the ACC by a mile.
