These are really, really rough times for BYU.

There’s no offense, not enough defense, and a five-game losing streak after starting out with an underwhelming 20-6 win over Portland State. With no conference, and no direct bowl tie, the Cougars can afford one more defeat the rest of the way.

On the plus side, the last five games are relative layups, but it would nice to be able to beat someone with a pulse.

Or at least be competitive.

Mississippi State could use one of those competitive performance things after getting destroyed on the road by Georgia and Auburn by a combined score of 80 to 13. There’s UMass ahead, Ole Miss, and hopefully an upset here or there, but lose to BYU, and getting to a bowl game might be a fight.

One Reason Why BYU Will Win

Nick Fitzgerald might be a terrific quarterback, but the Mississippi State passing game hasn’t been able to take off quite yet. The Bulldogs hit the skids against Auburn and Georgia, combining to complete 28-of-70 passes for just 260 yards and a score and four touchdowns.

There are a whole slew of issues with the Cougars, but the secondary has been okay so far. There need to be more interceptions, but the defense isn’t getting bombed on, and the run defense has the linebackers to not get gouged.

The Cougar D should be able to keep the team in the game, however …

One Reason Why Mississippi State Will Win

What the heck is this BYU offense?

It tried out six different players under center in last week’s ugly loss to Boise State, as the O tries to do something – anything.

The Cougars have given up a nation-high 12 interceptions for the third-worst offense in college football.

The giveaways won’t stop, scoring is like pulling teeth, and there’s absolutely no firepower. Come up with a few early scores, and Mississippi State should have this under wraps.

The Bulldogs are great at hanging on to the ball, grinding out drives, and controlling the clock. The Cougars really, really aren’t good at any of that.

What’s Going To Happen

Mississippi State will make the BYU misery continue.

The Cougars win 28-21 in last year’s game in Provo, but that’s when they could actually go on a scoring drive.

All of a sudden, now that they’re not playing great teams like Auburn and Georgia, the Bulldogs are going to look a whole lot better.

It might take a quarter, but two early touchdowns will put this away.
