It’s just assumed that the West is the Alabama Invitational, but LSU is still alive in the race, and so is Auburn, even with nasty dates ahead against Georgia as well as the Iron Bowl.
And Texas A&M is still alive, too.
It’ll be a rough run, but the Aggies need to win in and hope for chaos to kick in. With LSU still on the slate along with Auburn, this is a huge month for Kevin Sumlin and the program, especially after getting blasted by Mississippi State last week 35-14.
This has been an okay season for the Aggies, but a home loss would make it three defeats in the last four games – all in Kyle Field – and the Sumlin hot seat discussion would crank up to another level.
Auburn can still have a great season with a loss, but considering those games against Georgia and Alabama ahead, this could also end really, really badly if the it’s not able to come away with a win.
One Reason Why Auburn Will Win
Everyone will focus on the Texas A&M quarterback situation, but the rest of the offense was a mess against Mississippi State, too.
The receiving corps couldn’t make enough plays and dropped too many passes, and the O line had a rough day for a ground attack that didn’t have any room to move.
The Tiger offense gets most of the spotlight, but the defense has been a killer, too. The pass rush is fantastic, and the line has been great at camping out behind the line. The Aggies will have to deal with a D that’ll play with its hair on fire at times.
One Reason Why Texas A&M Will Win
It might not seem like much in a potential firefight, but the Texas A&M overall punting game should be a major threat.
A&M has the talent to keep up the pace, and it’s able to crank up good scoring drives, but it wouldn’t be a bad thing to own the field position battle.
Punter Shane Tripucka has been a weapon, averaging close to 46 yards per shot – he was one of the few bright spots against Mississippi State. The same goes for Christian Kirk, who returned a punt 26 yards.
On the flip side, punting has been an issue for Auburn, averaging an SEC-low 34.8 yards per try.
What’s Going To Happen
Blow off the clunker against Mississippi State – Texas A&M will show some fight again.
The offense needs better quarterback play from Kellen Mond and/or Nick Starkel, but they also need time to work. That’s going to be a problem against the Auburn defensive front.
But Texas A&M’s defense can get behind the line, too. Both offenses will have some big moments, but the defenses will have their say. too.
The Aggies will come up with a far better performance after having so many problems last week, but Auburn has had two weeks off to get ready, and it’ll get steadier play from the backfield.
