Auburn (5-1) vs. LSU (4-2) Game Preview
Broadcast, TV, Game Time
Date: Saturday, October 14th
Game Time: 3:30 pm ET
Venue: Tiger Stadium, Baton Rouge, LA
Last year, this game changed both programs. There was no guarantee that Gus Malzahn would’ve been fired in a loss, but he would’ve been in big, big trouble had his Tigers lost.
On the flip side, after a thrilling finish and a reversed call of what looked like a game-winning LSU score, the end of the Les Miles era was near.
This game won’t be quite so dramatic, but the stakes are massive.
Really, how good is Auburn?
Alabama has been acknowledged as the star of SEC stars, but is the win over Florida State enough to go by? Has it played anyone as good as Clemson at Clemson?
Georgia has been crushing everyone so far – everyone but Notre Dame on the road. Can the team really get it done with a freshman quarterback, and with all of the weight of the world on its shoulders now?
Auburn just keeps rolling right along, ripping through the last four games without breathing hard. Dog the light slate all you want, but the Tigers are 3-0 in SEC play and appear to be using this time and these chances to get everything together offensively.
This starts a run of three straight road games before dealing with Georgia and Alabama to close out the SEC season.
LSU overcame the Troy disaster with a gut-check win over Florida. For all the problems, and all of the issues, win out, and it’ll take the SEC title.
However, with three of the next four games on the road – including Alabama – there’s a big, big problem if the Tigers lose to the other Tigers.
One Reason Why Auburn Will Win
Now this is the Auburn running game we’ve all been waiting for.
After sputtering against Clemson – the stats make it look worse after allowing 11 sacks – and struggling against Mercer, everything clicked with over 800 yards and 12 scores over the last three games.
Kerryon Johnson has been magnificent, going on a touchdown tear over the last three games scoring 11 times, and ripping through Mississippi State for 116 yards and Ole Miss for 204.
It’s all working, and now it gets to go against an ultra-talented LSU defense that’s not even close to playing up to its talent level.
This is the D that gave up 285 yards on the ground to Mississippi State, 206 to Troy, and had problems against Florida last week. It’s going to get gouged by Auburn for over five yards per carry and 200+ yards.
One Reason Why LSU Will Win
Missouri, Mississippi State, and Ole Miss.
Yeah, the Auburn offense is looking great, but it hasn’t dealt with any nasty run defenses for a while.
The Tiger defensive front has the NFL upside, and the linebacking corps can hit – they can all get into the backfield.
Arden Key hasn’t cranked it up yet, and still, the Tigers are fantastic at getting into the backfield and attacking the quarterback with 20 sacks so far.
LB Corey Thompson has been great, the tackles are getting behind the line, and the defensive production has been fine. It’s the offense that’s been the issue, for the most part. The D is only giving up 308 yards per game.
Keep the score low, grind the game out, and channel the Clemson defensive playbook.
What’s Going To Happen
LSU will be more of a problem than Auburn fans might think.
The defense will keep the Tigers in the game, but the Auburn Tigers have a defense, too.
Auburn’s D has been great against the run and terrific at being disruptive. Neither offense will operate at peak efficiency, but Auburn’s attack will be just good enough on a few key drives to make LSU press. That’s when the AU D line will be turned loose.
