Just when it seemed like Auburn was going to be a dangerous sleeper for the College Football Playoff chase … clunk.
It couldn’t hold on in the second half at LSU, losing 27-23 in a killer it couldn’t afford to give away.
There’s still this road game at Arkansas, and there’s a date at Texas A&M to follow. Oh yeah – and then there’s Georgia and Alabama to finish up the SEC season.
Lose to the Hogs, and it’s very, very possible Auburn doesn’t win a conference game the rest of the way.
But there’s still hope for a dangerous Tiger team. Here’s the flip side – win out, and even at 10-2, Auburn would be in the SEC title game with a possible shot at the CFP.
And then there’s Arkansas, who with two straight blowout losses to South Carolina and Alabama on the road – along with the loss to Texas A&M – has politely left the SEC title chase. But is there enough time to get to a bowl game?
There are winnable games against Ole Miss, Coastal Carolina and Missouri to get close to six wins, but it’ll take an extra victory to get it done.
But for the program, and for Bret Bielema, coming up with a huge win over a brand name team is a desperate must. The Hogs need something positive, and beating Auburn at home would be that.
One Reason Why Auburn Will Win
Cole Kelley might not be good enough.
Built like an NBA power forward, Kelley is a big, tough, mobile quarterback with a decent upside, but he struggled to hit half of his passes last week against Arkansas, throwing for 200 yards with a touchdown and a pick.
But that was against Alabama. The hope is that he’ll overcome a running game that doesn’t work – the Hogs were shut down by South Carolina and the Tide on the ground – and with starter Austin Allen still out, Kelley has to rise up.
On the other side, stopping Kerryon Johnson and the Tiger running game will be a big, big problem for an Arkansas defensive front that doesn’t get behind the line and got ripped apart by Alabama.
One Reason Why Arkansas Will Win
Which Jarrett Stidham will show up?
Will it be the one who was almost perfect against Mississippi State, or the one who completed 9-of-26 passes against LSU and couldn’t get the offense moving in the second half?
Auburn’s running game will get its yards – Johnson is too good – but Stidham has to be great on the road. He’s faced three Tigers so far away from Auburn – he was lousy against Clemson and LSU, and great against Missouri, just like everyone is.
If the Arkansas defense can be decent, and if the line can sell out at all and bring a little pressure – hardly a given considering the problems getting behind the line – the Auburn O will stall like it did in Baton Rouge.
What’s Going To Happen
Auburn will bounce back – sort of.
Arkansas will come out jacked up at home in a desperation game – this is just the second home game since early September – but the run defense will have way too many problems.
Johnson is on fire, running for 100 yards in each of the last three games with 12 scores in the last four. He’ll be solid, the Auburn pass rush will give Kelley a hard time, and the Tigers will get back on track, even if it takes a half to open it up.
