Arkansas lost a heartbreaker to Texas A&M, but that’s no big deal as long as it doesn’t slip the rest of the way.
Obviously, easier said than done.
The offense has had its moments, and the defense has been a wee bit rocky, but with a win over South Carolina, the Hogs would prove that they might just be good enough to come up with a shocker or two along the way against the rest of the tough slate.
South Carolina, also lost to Texas A&M, dropping a tough 24-17 road game last week. The Gamecocks like to muck it up, slow the game down, and try to win close late.
Arkansas likes to muck it up, slow the game down, and try to win close late.
So while this might not be interesting theater for a while … it should be close late.
One Reason Why Arkansas Will Win
South Carolina has absolutely no running game right now.
Texas A&M isn’t exactly a brick wall, yet it was able to keep the Gamecocks to just 23 rushing yards on 26 carries. And why? The Aggies destroyed the USC offensive line with seven sacks and 12 tackles for loss.
The Arkansas defensive front has been fine so far – nothing special – and it’s not getting into the backfield as much as it should. For this game, though, it’s not going to have to worry about being pounded on.
Don’t turn the ball over – not too much of a problem overall so far, forgetting about one key play in OT against A&M – hit a few downfield plays, and get up early. If Arkansas can do that, it’ll all be fine.
One Reason Why South Carolina Will Win
The Arkansas offensive front hasn’t been anything great, either.
Granted, last week it blasted away on New Mexico State for 230 yards and three scores, and it kept the Aggies out of the backfield, but pass protection has been a big problem allowing 11 sacks so far.
The D also allowed NMSU QB Tyler Rogers to get a little bit too comfortable, letting him throw for 344 yards and two scores. Jake Bentley has been good enough to get by, but this week he’ll need to push the ball down the field a little bit more.
The Arkansas secondary will give up third down plays – lots and lots of third down plays.
What’s Going To Happen
South Carolina doesn’t control the clock as well as as it needs to, while Arkansas is a master at time of possession.
Both quarterbacks will be efficient and effective, but Arkansas will be able to crank up the running game a wee bit more than needed.
This won’t be a work of art in any way, but for Arkansas, it’ll be good enough to come away with a tough road win.
