All of a sudden, Arizona State football is being talked about for more than whether or not head coach Todd Graham is on a hot seat.
With one of the biggest stunners of the season, the team that can’t play a lick of defense held a College Football Playoff-caliber Washington team in a 13-7 gamechanger. That was good, but now the Sun Devils have to start rolling in the South to get in the Pac-12 chase.
Utah needs the win even more after losing its last two games in tough fights with Stanford and USC. On the plus side, the Utes are good enough to hang with the two teams that might end up playing each other for the Pac-12 title. On the other side, Utah has to be perfect to be one of those teams in the Pac-12 championship.
However, outside of the trip to Washington, the rest of the schedule isn’t all that bad. Beat the Sun Devils, hope for another USC Pac-12 loss, and roll the dice.
One Reason Why Arizona State Will Win
It doesn’t seem like it since the offensive line has been such a problem and the miserable pass defense has taken such a beating, but ASU does a slew of the little things right.
They doesn’t turn the ball over – the Sun Devils lead the Pac-12 in fewest turnovers – and they lead the nation in fewest penalties with a mere three per game. That’s why, in a weird game like the Washington upset, ASU was able to keep control – it didn’t do a bunch of dumb things to help out the Dawgs with no giveaways, just one penalty, and with three fourth down conversions.
Utah doesn’t live off of turnover margin, but it doesn’t hurt that it’s third in the nation in takeaways – it’s probably not going to get them.
One Reason Why Utah Will Win
ASU had to deal with Dante Pettis last week, and now it has to be just as concerned about Boobie Hobbs on punt returns.
The Arizona State punting game has been an issue – it doesn’t net out a ton of yards – but outside of one mistake down the middle of the field, there weren’t any kicks to let Pettis do anything, returning three punts for seven yards.
Hobbs didn’t get much of a chance against USC last week, but he’s one of the best in the country averaging 14.5 yards per return.
ASU has to worry about kickoff returns, too. It’s only given up five so far, but was hit for a game-changing touchdown by Rashaad Penny in the loss to San Diego State, cranking up the average yards allowed to 38.2 per return.
What’s Going To Happen
Is there a chance Tyler Huntley can be back for the Utes? The banged up quarterback has missed the last few games, and while Troy Williams hasn’t been bad, Huntley made the offense roll. He’s still questionable.
Both teams like to dominate the time of possession battle, and neither team turns it over or makes a slew of mistakes. But the ASU pass defense will be the ASU pass defense again soon.
As home, Utah will have just enough offensive balance and generate a little bit of a pass rush against the mediocre ASU line to survive and keep the Pac-12 season alive.
