Style points sort of matter from here on out.
Of course, if Alabama wins the rest of its games, it’s the unquestioned No. 1 see in the College Football Playoff with a spot in the Sugar Bowl. But, it might like to have the just-in-case buffer if it loses the SEC Championship.
12-1 with a loss to Auburn and an SEC title would still get the Crimson Tide in, but it’s not like they’re thinking about that.
It’s The Process – they’re thinking about making sure they get by an LSU team that’s still in the SEC race, too.
The Tigers have had two weeks off after going on a three-game SEC winning streak. Thanks to the win over Auburn, beat Alabama, and then roll through Arkansas, at Tennessee and Texas A&M, and it’s in the SEC Championship.
Alabama has won six straight in the series, with the last LSU that 9-6 epic in 2011. Win this, and the Ed Orgeron era goes to a whole other level.
Win this, Alabama, and it’s on to Starkville.
One Reason Why Alabama Will Win
The LSU just doesn’t move the ball well enough and the O line is about to get destroyed.
Alabama has two weeks to prepare to stop Derrius Guice? Uh oh.
That means the Tiger passing game has to be efficient, effective, and has to keep the chains moving, and that’s just not what the team does. The Tigers can grind out the clock and own the time of possession, but they’re awful on third downs.
The No. 1 defense in the country is easily No. 1 against the run and sixth in pass efficiency D – and again, it’s rested.
Alabama has only allowed more than 88 rushing yards once – 144 to Colorado State. No, Guice isn’t going anywhere, however …
One Reason Why LSU Will Win
LSU has more of a downfield passing game than it might seem.
Granted, it’s all a function of catching defenses worrying about the running game and getting caught flat-footed at times, but the LSU passing attack is cranking up over nine yards per pass. Other than the two interceptions against Troy, there haven’t been any mistakes.
LSU has thrown just three picks on the year.
No, the passing game isn’t moving the chains, but Alabama has to be stretched a little bit deep – or, at least, tested.
LSU doesn’t turn the ball over, the pass rush is among the best in the country, and the athleticism and talent are in place to at least hang around. Remember, last year’s game was a dogfight until the end in a 10-0 Alabama win. But …
What’s Going To Happen
LSU won’t be able move the ball well enough.
The Tiger defense will rise up and be solid for a little while, but eventually, the Crimson Tide ground game will break through and open it up a little bit. Just because LSU isn’t miserable at throwing the ball doesn’t mean that it can do it when it absolutely has to.
Alabama will have to battle, but the defense won’t let there be a whole bunch of drama in the second half.
