Sort of lost in the Kevin Sumlin Hot Seat narrative is that – shhhhhhhh – Texas A&M is 4-1 and would be 5-0 if not for the all-timer thing Josh Rosen pulled off in the opener.

Yeah, Arkansas and South Carolina isn’t beating Alabama and Georgia, but those are the types of stand up double SEC victories the good teams need to fight through no matter how they look.

Ask Tennessee if it would like to be 2-0 in conference play.

However, with Alabama this week and a trip to Florida to follow, the season could take a quick left turn if the Aggies start to stumble.

The Crimson Tide might not have been so good it’s become routine.

They’ve been able to bludgeon Vanderbilt and Ole Miss by a combined score of 125-3 in, arguably, the two most dominant performances of the Nick Saban era.

But can the team maintain this ridiculously high level – even by its own standards – on the road? This is sort of it. After this, Bama leaves the state just once more – a date at Mississippi State – the rest of the way.

One Reason Why Alabama Will Win

Kellen Mond, meet the Alabama defense.

The Crimson Tide pass rush isn’t there compared to the last few seasons, but it was last week against Ole Miss with five sacks making life miserable for QB Shea Patterson.

The defense swarmed all over everything Vanderbilt tried to do the week before, allowing a fat load of nothing in the 59-0 win.

Possibly the most interesting and telling stat of this two-game run, Alabama has allowed just one third down conversion. Vandy and Ole Miss converted 1-of-23 tries.

Mond has improved and been fine – he was effective on his short-range throws, and ran well against South Carolina – but this isn’t a game for a freshman. Alabama will train everyone on No. 11, and make everyone else try to produce.

One Reason Why Texas A&M Will Win

Granted, this is partly because the Aggies are giving up way too many passing yards, but the run defense has been solid thanks to a decent pass rush.

Arkansas ran for 228 yards and three scores, but that was about it – no one else has hit the 100-yard mark.

Last week, the Aggie defensive front came up with seven sacks of South Carolina’s Jake Bentley, and came up with six sacks the week before against Arkansas QB Austin Allen.

The Alabama offense has operated around the blasting running game, but it’s been strong so far at protecting Jalen Hurts. A&M has to get into the backfield and stop the Bama attack before it gets going. Let the Tide running game get into a lather, and forget it.

What’s Going To Happen

Have you seen Alabama over the last few weeks?

Texas A&M is okay. It’s playing well enough to get to at least eight wins and go to a decent bowl game, but the Crimson Tide defensive front is doing something special, the running game is doing something amazing, and the No. 1 team in the nation is showing it’s making this season its own.

It’s all going to keep on rolling – that won’t be an indictment of the Aggies in any way. Alabama is just playing that well.
