Every program has that thorn-in-the-side team that always seems to give it a problem.
Alabama has had an Ole Miss problem lately, Florida State is having issues swatting away NC State over the last few years, and Wisconsin always has a Northwestern issue.
The Badgers got through last year with a 21-7 win in Evanston, but the Cats pulled off wins in 2014 and 2015.
Of course, once in a while, there’s going to be a 70-23 muscle-flexing win – like Bucky came up with in 2010 – and this time around, with two weeks off to prepare, this is when Wisconsin has to show that it really has the chops to be seen as a possible College Football Playoff player.
Northwestern might be 2-1, but it was awful against Duke and struggled against a horrible Nevada team. Wisconsin is 3-0 with three blowouts – coming off a 40-6 win at BYU – and it should be good enough to win this with ease.
But it’s Northwestern.
One Reason Why Northwestern Will Win
With some due respect to Utah State’s Kent Myers, for the first time all year, Wisconsin has to face a great passing quarterback and a real passing game.
Clayton Thorson struggled against Duke – hitting just 38% of his throws – but he lit up Nevada for 352 yards connecting on 74% of his passes, and he destroyed Bowling Green for 370 yards hitting 77% of his throws.
Last year against the Badgers, he threw 52 times for 277 yards and a touchdown. Considering the Wisconsin secondary is still a wee bit of a question mark after not being pushed yet, and Thorson is always going to be pressing.
One Reason Why Wisconsin Will Win
Yeah, Thorson went off against Nevada and Bowling Green, but Nevada and Bowling Green are awful at this whole college football thing.
Duke was dominate defensively in the backfield, and was great at keeping the chains moving with easy third down plays. Was it an aberration for the Northwestern defense? Maybe, but it was the one team that had problems with Nevada, too.
As always, the Badgers are going to try cranking up the running game right away, but as the BYU game showed, Alex Hornibrook can be devastating when he gets time to work. He hit 18-of-19 throws for 256 yards and four scores, and that one miss was a drop.
Considering Northwestern doesn’t do enough to get to the quarterback, the Badger O should be balanced.
What’s Going To Happen
It’s Northwestern. Wisconsin dominated for parts of last year’s game, and only won by 14. Joel Stave couldn’t stop throwing picks and turning the ball over in the previous two games, and the Badgers lost.
But this time around, Northwestern isn’t sharp enough yet.
Getting the two weeks off to rest up will help the Badgers more than the Wildcats – the O line needed some time to heal up. It’ll take about a half to pull away, but the Badgers will dominate in the second half. The pass rush will take over late, overcoming a big yardage day from Thorson.
