In theory, this should be one of the wildest and craziest shootouts of the year.

Washington State is always all about winging it around the yard, and that’s what Nevada is trying to do with its Air Raid style of offense. But it’s not working out that way.

Nevada can’t seem to get anything going under new head coach Jay Norvell – bottoming out in a home loss to Idaho State – and that means it’s head-check time for Wazzu.

The Cougars have managed to get past the FCS game it always seems to lose, and it got over the braincramp type of performance it normally has early on – Boise State took care of that.

But with USC up next, and road games at Oregon and Cal to follow, this is when the machine has to sharpen up.

One Reason Why Nevada Will Win

What are the Wolf Pack doing well? Not much, but they are doing a decent job of keeping their quarterbacks clean and defenses out of the backfield.

That’s mostly a function of the offensive design, but the line really is doing an okay job of holding its own – the attack just isn’t quite clicking like it’s supposed to.

The defense is getting into the backfield, though, and while the sacks aren’t there, the pressure against the run is. However …

One Reason Why Washington State Will Win

Nevada is getting burnt to a crisp when teams try to throw.

Washington State is going to try to throw.

There was an interception against Northwestern, but that was one of the few big plays from the Pack. The Wildcats and Toledo combined to hit well over 70% of their passes, and Idaho State came through when it had to through the air.

Without a dangerous pass rush to bother Luke Falk, he should build off the 396-yard, six touchdown day against Oregon State with a huge performance.

What’s Going To Happen

Nevada has been able to hang around in games so far, but it hasn’t had a whole lot of luck. It lost in the final moments to Northwestern and Idaho State, and it battled well with Toledo.

However, this is an awful matchup for the Mountain Westers, and now, it’s all about Washington State and if its head is on straight. If the Cougars can come out with a hot first half like they did against Oregon State, this should be over fast.
