Beating Boston College and Utah State might not seem like that big a deal, but this is Wake Forest. Going 3-0 to start the season by a total score of 131 to 27 is something Clemson or Florida State should do, no matter who they go against.
The defense has been suffocating, the offense ultra-efficient, and the team has been shockingly perfect so far.
But with Florida State up next, and then a run of four away games in the next five, there can’t be a slip against Appalachian State on the road.
This hasn’t been the dominant ASU team it was expected to be to kick things off, but it was supposed to be 2-1 with a loss to Georgia and wins over Savannah State and Texas State. However, it’s not supposed to take a fight for the Mountaineers to beat TXST 20-13.
Beat Wake Forest, though, no matter how it looks, and it’ll be a massive moment for the program and the Sun Belt.
One Reason Why Appalachian State Will Win
ASU’s defensive front is doing a fantastic job of getting behind the line.
Texas State was hanging around all game long last week, but when it was time to step up and make something big happen, the Mountaineer defensive front was able to do it.
Wake Forest has lived on tackles for loss, too, but the ASU O line has been solid when it comes to keeping the backfield clean. In just three games, the Mountaineers have given up just three sacks.
One Reason Why Wake Forest Will Win
The Demon Deacons don’t screw up. They’re not going to give Appalachian State the mistakes needed to pull this off.
Air tight, Wake Forest has only lost one turnover in the first three games, it’s outstanding at controlling the clock, and it’s not committing a slew of bad penalties. There might not be anything flashy about what the team does, but it’s great across the board.
Appalachian State has problems with penalties – getting flagged over eight times per game – and it doesn’t grind out drives. The running game is okay, but it’s not the killer it’s been in the past.
ASU has to out-Wake Forest, Wake Forest, and it won’t be able to do it.
What’s Going To Happen
Wake Forest will deal with its biggest test so far against a strong, veteran team that knows how to win games at home, but slow and steady will win this race.
The Demon Deacon defense is too good, the offense does everything right, and the team will keep control of a game that always seems like it’s one big play away from going the other way.
For ASU, that play won’t come.
