This is a moment. If either team hopes to come up with a good season, and maybe push for a bowl game, it has to win this.
Virginia looked great against William & Mary, lousy in a loss to Indiana, and next week has to go on the road to Boise State. Other than Boston College, every team on the schedule the rest of the way will probably go bowling.
UConn struggled against Holy Cross to kick things off, but last week’s game against South Florida was cancelled.
With the AAC season now kicking off for the Huskies at SMU next week, and with Memphis to follow, the rested Huskies can quickly rise up in Randy Edsall’s return to the program.
One Reason Why Virginia Will Win
Get ready for the Virginia passing game to crank it up.
UConn clamped down in the second half, but Holy Cross QB Peter Pujals bombed away at will in Week One, throwing for 358 yards and a score. Now it’s up to Kurt Benkert to to more down the field with a passing game that threw 66 times against the Hoosiers, but went for just 259 yards.
That’s okay. UConn’s secondary will give up third down throws and should have issues giving up first down after first down. So Virginia is averaging a pathetic 7.7 yards per completion? The offense will still move.
One Reason Why Connecticut Will Win
The rested Huskies should be able to shut down everything and anything Virginia tries to do on the ground. And yes, while Benkert will throw, there’s no real worry about getting hit for anything big down the field.
The Huskies combined quarterback forces with David Pindell and Bryant Shirreffs throwing for 278 yards against Holt Cross, but it was the rushing of Nate Hopkins with 130 yards and three scores that saved the day.
Grind down the clock, keep the score low, balance out the attack. UConn should be able to keep this manageable into the fourth quarter.
What’s Going To Happen
Virginia’s offense will work a whole lot better than it did against Indiana.
There won’t be a whole slew of fireworks, but Benkert will effective, and there won’t be any turnovers to give UConn any easy points.
It’ll be too much of a grind for the Huskies to score – there won’t be any fourth quarter heroics like there were against the Crusaders.
