The thing is working – for both teams.

Arizona needed to see if the Rich Rodriguez offense could finally start to get on a roll, and it did in a big, big way against UTEP.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, it’s only UTEP, but if the O was ever going to blow up, that was the time, rolling at will for 326 rushing yards in a 63-16 win. Now the Wildcats have to keep it going against a team with a defense.

Utah has been in the midst of a big tweak all season long, trying to generate more of a downfield passing game to the already strong base of tough running and nasty defense.

The Utes have been fine, but now they have to take care of their first trip out of Utah with Stanford and USC coming up next.

If Arizona can pull this off, all of a sudden, the look and feel of the Pac-12 South might change.

One Reason Why Utah Will Win

Yeah, the Arizona running game ripped up Northern Arizona for over 500 yards and destroyed UTEP, but it was slowed to a stop by Houston in the 19-16 loss. So far, the Utah run defense has been a rock.

Granted, playing North Dakota, BYU and San Jose State isn’t like dealing with a murderer’s row, but the run defense hasn’t allowed a thing, giving up a grand total of 148 yards with a score.

As always, Utah is a killer at getting behind the line, but that’s par of the course. The bigger positive is a passing game that hit the 300-yard mark in each of the last two games – throwing for 300 isn’t the norm for the program under Kyle Whittingham.

One Reason Why Arizona Will Win

Brandon Dawkins has stepped up to become the new Arizona quarterback star. Now his UTEP game has to carry over.

Air-tight against the Miners, he completed 18-of-21 passes for 155 yards and three scores, and ran for 133 yards and three scores on just 14 carries. Now he’s become the sort of dangerous all-around playmaker the offense needs, but he’s getting help from the backs, too.

But to win, the Wildcats will need some help. Utah should provide it with penalties, having a huge problem getting flagged over nine times a game so far.

What’s Going To Happen

The Arizona defense has been surprisingly solid so far, but that’s about to change.

The Utah defense will do enough to snuff out the Wildcat ground game at times, and then it’ll be up to Dawkins to take over through the air – and he won’t be able to do it at key times.

Tyler Huntley will come up with a third straight 300-yard day as Utah keeps on rolling along – going 4-0 under the radar.
