Did anything interesting happen last week in Tom Herman’s debut?
For all of the hype and all of the promise, that all went out the window as Maryland powered through the Texas defense that was rocky early, couldn’t come up with a late stop, and struggled everywhere in between.
But San Jose State is the perfect cure.
Blast away on the Spartans, beat USC the week after. and then take care of the soft Big 12 opener against Iowa State, and then …
Beat the Spartans, Texas. Prove that there’s hope.
One Reason Why San Jose State Will Win
Is it possible the Spartans can get their running game going against Texas like Maryland did?
Tackling still appears to be optional for the Longhorns, and San Jose State has to take advantage by getting Zamore Zigler and the rest of the running backs rolling right away.
Cal Poly doesn’t have a defense, but the Spartans were still impressive on the ground, while Montel Aaron looked like a possible solution for the passing game with a three-score day.
SJSU has offensive weapons – now they have to be unleashed.
One Reason Why Texas Will Win
Start running, get running, establish an attitude.
Shane Buechele threw for 375 yards, and the special teams came up with several big plays, but the running game was inexplicably stuffed. Behind a line with a few NFL caliber starters, that’s inexcusable.
Buechele is banged up with a shoulder injury, but the running backs have to establish themselves anyway after the ground attack came up with just 98 yards – and with Buechele and the receivers in the wildcat accounting for a slew of them.
Texas will always throw under Herman, but for this week, power away. Show that you can, Texas.
What’s Going To Happen
It’s not going to be the cathartic win the fans might need after last week, but it won’t be a problem.
The defense will still look sketchy at times, but the offense won’t be stopped. Give it about a quarter, and then it’ll be a showcase of Longhorn offensive firepower.
