It’s becoming a tired storyline, but it’s still a part of the puzzle.
The head coaching loser’s hot seat status will go to another level.
Kevin Sumlin has already gone through a slew of issues after the UCLA meltdown and with two tough performances in mediocre wins over overmatched teams, while Arkansas head man Bret Bielema has had to sit around for two weeks after getting run over by TCU in a 28-7 home loss.
There’s time for the Hogs to make a little bit of a run with New Mexico State and and South Carolina after this before going to Alabama, but that’s not the point. The program is supposed to be better than this.
The same goes for the Aggies, who have the talent, athleticism and skill – as always – but there’s no excuse. After that UCLA, not only do they have just one road game between then and November 18th, but they only leave Texas once.
Now in Arlington in the big stadium, both teams need to show up and produce.
Or else.
One Reason Why Arkansas Will Win
The defense didn’t play all that poorly against TCU.
It got powered on late, and gave up some scores in crunch time, but it held its own. The offense didn’t help the cause, but that might just be because TCU can play a little D, too.
After the first half in Pasadena, generating points, for Texas A&M has been like pulling teeth. And why? The line is having problems in pass protection.
Freshman QB Kellen Mond is still trying to figure out his way in the world, and it’s allowing defenses to tee off. The Hogs are going to load up and force the A&M passing game to work – and it might not.
One Reason Why Texas A&M Will Win
Help is on the way.
Part of the reason you schedule Nicholls State and Louisiana is to stink it up and still win, and playing those two allowed a few of the parts to heal up and get back. Star RB Trayveon Williams is returning along with Connor Lanfear for the O line – the ground game should be stronger now.
Even with a great veteran quarterback in Austin Allen, the Hog passing game stalled to a dead stop against TCU. Can the offense keep up if the Aggies get up early? If the Horned Frogs could pound away, then can A&M just might be able to crank it up like it did early against UCLA.
What’s Going To Happen
With the two weeks off to fix the glitches, and with A&M’s offense sputtering too much, Arkansas will take over early on and do more pounding away.
Quarterback play will matter. Allen will get past his rough outing against TCU and be efficient when needed to pull off a grind of a game.
The Aggies will show a little flash, but not enough to pull this off. Again, with A&M, it’s consistency, consistency, consistency. It won’t have it.
