Game Time: 3:30 pm ET
Venue: Amon G. Carter Stadium, Fort Worth, TX
Last weekend was all about Oklahoma’s performance against Ohio State, but flying about 50 feet below that was a brilliant game from TCU against Arkansas.
It wasn’t a thing of beauty, but the Horned Frogs went on the road to an SEC stadium and dominated, pulling away late because they were tougher and stronger than the team that was supposed to be ultra-tough and ultra-strong.
With the Big 12 opener at Oklahoma State next week, and with West Virginia and a date at Kansas State to follow, it’s going to get tough fast, but there can’t be any looking past SMU.
The Mustangs haven’t been tested yet against Stephen F. Austin and North Texas, but the offense has done exactly what it’s supposed to do with 112 points so far.
And now they get to see just how good they really are.
One Reason Why TCU Will Win
Welcome back, TCU defense.
After a year off, the Horned Frogs are looking the part again, dominating Arkansas and allowing just seven points in the first two games.
No. 1 in the nation in red zone defense, everything is coming from the pressure generated from eight sacks and 21 tackles for loss for the nation’s fourth-best D.
The SMU offense might be humming, but the backfield hasn’t been pressured yet. QB Ben Hicks and company are about to need to go at a whole other speed. But …
One Reason Why SMU Will Win
The Mustang offense really is rocking.
Again, the competition hasn’t been TCU when it comes to defense, but Hicks has been terrific, throwing for 312 yards and four scores last week against North Texas cranking out a steady stream of points.
And Courtland Sutton is being Courtland Sutton.
If he’s not the best wide receiver in college football, he’s not far off, showing off all he can do with eight catches for 163 yards and four scores last week. Even if TCU rolls everyone his way, it might not matter. Get the ball in his hands and let him work.
What’s Going To Happen
SMU will give TCU a bit of a tussle, but watch out for Kenny Hill to go off.
The veteran Horned Frog QB didn’t do too much against Arkansas, but he was effective when he had to be. This week, he’ll hit the 300-yard mark without a problem a week after SMU gave up 424 yards to Mason Fine of North Texas.
TCU’s D will tighten up when it has to in a comfortable win, but SMU will look okay.
