See, Nebraska. Was that really so hard?
When you’re not throwing a ton of bad interceptions, life becomes a whole lot easier.
It’s not like Nebraska’s offense went ballistic – it didn’t need to.
It didn’t need to in any game so far except for the Oregon shootout. It just needed to not make a whole slew of big mistakes and not royally screw up. There was one lost fumble, but Tanner Lee didn’t throw any interceptions, he didn’t force anything crazy, and he let his receivers do the rest of the work hitting 17-of-24 passes for 246 yards and three scores.
And the defense did its part, too.
Illinois hasn’t shown anything against the decent teams on the schedule – USF, and now Nebraska – but that’s been the Hsuker D so far this year. Lost in all of the problems has been a decent performance from that side of the ball. When it’s not being put into awful situations – and when Lee isn’t throwing a bunch of pick sixes – there’s hope.
Illinois was held to just over 200 yards of total offense and two field goals, the O kept it relatively close to the vest, and boom.
So now, as bad as the Huskers were to start the season, they’re 2-0 in Big Ten play with Wisconsin coming into Lincoln. If the run defense can rise up and rock, and as long as Lee and the offense don’t turn it over, then 3-0 Nebraska suddenly becomes 3-0 Big Ten West leader Nebraska.
