This has to be a shootout, right?
Middle Tennessee was held in check by Vanderbilt last week in a rough 28-6 loss, but there’s too much talent, too much firepower, and too much in place for a team good enough to win the Conference USA title to be that mediocre offensively.
Syracuse ripped apart Central Connecticut to shreds, going off in a 50-7 win with all the key parts playing exactly like they were supposed to. With this, and then Central Michigan next, this is when the Orange have to get everything in place and rolling before going to LSU and NC State.
This is the first time the two teams have played.
One Reason Why Middle Tennessee Will Win
Get ready for the offense to open it up again.
QB Brent Stockstill was held in check by the Commodores, but WR Richie James wasn’t, catching ten passes for 112 yards and a score as the only part of the offensive puzzle that worked.
Central Connecticut was never going to be able to throw the ball on the Syracuse secondary, but Stockstill will.
This might be an improved Orange D, but it’s still going to have to prove it can handle a real, live attack that can stretch the field. Stockstill should be fine if he gets time – the Syracuse pass rush is okay, not great.
One Reason Why Syracuse Will Win
Either Vanderbilt’s passing game is special all of a sudden, or Middle Tennessee has a few problems in the secondary.
The Blue Raiders sent everyone to stop Vandy star RB Ralph Webb, and it worked, However, Kyle Shurmur went off, throwing for 296 yards and three scores in a nearly perfect performance.
Eric Dungey looked in midseason form, hitting 28-of-36 passes for 328 yards and three scores, while Steve Ishmael caught 12 passes for 134 yards.
Get ready for more of the same. Middle Tennessee will keep Dungey from taking off – he ran for a team-high 51 yards and two scores – but it’ll get bombed on.
What’s Going To Happen
The two teams will combine for close to 700 passing yards in a fun and wild shootout, but Syracuse will be just a bit more effective at home.
Neither running game will do much of anything, but Stockstill and Dungey will make up for it by putting on a show.
Expect fast drives, a great pace, and one of the more entertaining games of the mid-afternoon.
