If the SEC East isn’t there for the taking, it’s certainly looking like it might be open for discussion.
Florida still doesn’t have an offense, Georgia lost its starting quarterback, Tennessee looked vulnerable against Georgia Tech, and Vanderbilt and Kentucky are Vanderbilt and Kentucky.
Now it’s up to Missouri and South Carolina – both with second-year head coaches – to at least mount a challenge. The winner of the SEC opener will be alive and kicking in the race, while – for all intents and purposes considering what’s next – that’s it for any real SEC title dreams for the loser.
Missouri’s defense that struggled so much last year failed to show up in the opener against Missouri State, but Drew Lock and the offense went wild in the 72-43 win.
The Tigers didn’t look all that great, at least defensively.
South Carolina’s offense that struggled so much last year failed to show up in the opener against NC State, but the special teams, Deebo Samuel, and timely D were enough for the 35-28 win.
One Reason Why South Carolina Will Win
Gamecocks, if you’re ever going to try opening up the offense, this is it.
Jake Bentley had a nice game against NC State, throwing for 215 yards and three touchdowns with an interception. He had to keep throwing thanks to a running game that didn’t go anywhere, while Samuel went off, catching five passes for 83 yards and two scores – and returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown.
Now it’s time to start throwing, and throw some more against a still-suspect Mizzou D that got lit up by Missouri State for 353 yards and two scores and struggled in an ugly overall performance.
South Carolina is able to find ways to win – it did last week – but against the Tigers, it’s okay to have an offense. But …
One Reason Why Missouri Will Win
Can South Carolina actually keep up any sort of pace?
NC State did everything right last week against the Gamecocks except win.
The offense moved the ball well – doubling up on USC in yards – owned the time of possession, and stuffed everything the Gamecocks wanted to do on the ground.
Now Mizzou has to do what State’s Ryan Finley did and throw for 415 yards, but it has to come through in the clutch.
South Carolina is obviously a different animal than Missouri State, but QB Drew Lock showed off what’s about to happen in the SEC under offensive coordinator Josh Heupel.
521 passing yards, seven touchdowns, over 15 yards per pass, and 202 yards and two touchdowns on the ground from Damage Crockett. Get the offense rolling again, and dare the Gamecocks to keep up.
What’s Going To Happen
Will Muschamp always finds ways to win with teams that can’t crank up the O. But this week at home, Missouri will overcome a slew of mistakes and a big problem on defense – the Gamecock running game will work this week – with another good game from Lock.
Mizzou will be more balanced than it was last week, it’ll control the clock, and unlike NC State, it’ll capitalize on enough opportunities to win.
