Oh, do be careful here, South Carolina.
After a stunning win over NC State to start the season, and a blowout over a badly-flawed Missouri, the formula didn’t work in a tough home loss to Kentucky.
Now, with a road game at Texas A&M up next, and with Wofford the only relative tap-in the rest of the way, there’s no more margin for error.
Lose to a team that might just be the best that Conference USA has to offer, and all of a sudden, what started out as such a promising season might quickly deteriorate into a disaster.
Louisiana Tech already got its clocked cleaned by one SEC team – losing to Mississippi State 57-21 – but after taking down Western Kentucky in a thrilling last-second 23-22 win last week, it should be relatively smooth sailing from here on.
Win, and the New Year’s Six bowl appearance from the Group of Five champions will be a real possibility.
One Reason Why Louisiana Tech Will Win
South Carolina was already offensively challenged to begin with, and now it has to go on without injured superstar WR and return man Deebo Samuel.
The running game has been non-existenent at times, getting stuffed by Kentucky for just 54 yards and coming up with just 257 in the first three games.
The Louisiana Tech run defense hasn’t been a rock, and it hasn’t done nearly enough to get behind the line, but it should get a break this week in Columbia.
If J’Mar Smith can get the passing game working a bit after throwing for 306 yards last week against the Hilltoppers, and the Bulldogs can make USC throw, this will be a dogfight.
One Reason Why South Carolina Will Win
South Carolina has to win the turnover margin.
No, really, South Carolina has to win the turnover margin. It didn’t against Kentucky – turning the ball over twice, but finishing even – and more importantly, it couldn’t get the defense off the field.
UK seemingly hit every third down conversion and always, always had the ball. So what’s the positive here?
Louisiana Tech is just okay when it comes to third down plays, it doesn’t hit enough key passes, and it’s been mediocre in turnover margin.
As long as the Gamecocks are at least a +2, and the bend-but-rarely-break defense keeps on holding up, they should survive.
What’s Going To Happen
Okay, Jake Bentley. Time to be amazing.
The South Carolina quarterback might not have Samuel around anymore, but he should be able to spread the ball around well enough to keep the offense moving.
Louisiana Tech won’t be able to explode, and it won’t be able to get the ground game going. Without Samuel, the Gamecocks will win ugly, and they’ll defy logic with how they do it, but they don’t know any other way.
