SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — The San Jose State Spartans dropped their second straight road game in a 54-16 loss to the Utah Utes at Rice-Eccles Stadium Saturday night.

Utah won the coin toss and got the ball first.

The ball sailed all the way into the end zone. As a result, Utah started on the 25, but they were stopped on the third down and ended up settling for a field goal. It was 3-0 Utes at 11:35 of the first quarter.

Matt Gay kicked a 56-yard field goal to put the Utes up 6-0 with 8:05 left in the first quarter. With the field goal, Gay was 9-9 on the season.

San Jose State recovered a Tyler Huntley fumble on the Utah 15-yard line and kicked in a field goal to cut the lead in half, 6-3, with 5:07 left in the first quarter. After that, a five-yard sack led to an unsuccessful third down attempt, which prompted the Utes to punt.

Utah settled for another field goal to snatch a 9-3 lead with 1:36 left in the first quarter. The Utes held a 9-3 lead over the Spartans after the first quarter.

The Utes added to their lead when Darren Carrington II ran seven yards for a touchdown, giving the Utes a 16-3 lead at 13:44 left of the second quarter.

Carrington II scored his second touchdown of the game on a 26-yard pass from Tyler Huntley to put the Utes ahead 23-3 with 6:34 left in the second quarter. For the game Carrington II ended up with 9 receptions for 153 yards and three touchdowns.

Zack Moss scored a five-yard touchdown to extend the Utes’ lead to 30-3 with 3:32 left in the second quarter.

Brandon Crawford kicked a good 51-yard field goal with 1:08 left in the second quarter, but San Jose State continued to trail Utah 30-6.

The Spartans had to go back to quarterback Josh Love who replaced Montel Aaron who left the game with a knee injury. He was spotted on the sidelines with his right knee wrapped in ice and on crutches.

San Jose State took advantage of a Utah turnover and cut the lead to 30-13 with 46 seconds left in the second quarter. Love threw a complete pass to Bailey Gaither, who ran for a 47-yard touchdown. The drive was two plays and 47 yards in a span of 14 seconds.

That was pretty much all of offense that the Spartans would have as they would trail the Utes 30-13 at the half.

In the second half the Utes Huntley found Raelon Singleton for a 13-yard touchdown, expanding their lead to 37-13 with 2:36 left in the third quarter.

Utah had a 37-13 lead over San Jose State after three quarters.

San Jose State added another field goal off a 38-yard kick by Crawford, but still trailed Utah 37-16 at 14:20 of the fourth quarter.

Hundley threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Carrington II. Utah stretched its lead to 44-16 at 11:21 of the fourth quarter.

Gay made a 20-yard field goal, increasing Utah’s lead to 47-16 lead with 3:48 left in the fourth quarter.

Devonta’e Henry-Cole netted a 10-yard touchdown to lengthen Utah’s lead to 54-16 with 58 seconds left in regulation.
