Week 4 Roundup
Alright, San Diego State. Focus, focus, focus, focus, focus.
There’s no way the Aztecs are getting into the College Football Playoff – the overall schedule isn’t good enough – but now that it has wins over Arizona State and Stanford on the resume, and after getting by a dangerous Air Force squad in a car wash, where’s the mistake going to come from?
The Aztecs should be double-digit favorites the rest of the way against everyone but Boise State, but there can’t be another South Alabama of last year – losing 42-24 on the first day of October.
There also can’t be another November swoon, failing to show up against Colorado State in a meaningless game – the Aztecs had the division all wrapped up – and they can’t lose like they did against Wyoming.
They need to be playing for something even bigger than another Mountain West title.
The two-time defending champ is even more efficient offensively this season, the ground attack is still outstanding, and the team is dominant at controlling the tempo and the clock as a way to settle down when things aren’t working quite right.
And now the hard part of the schedule is done. SDSU, let the Air Force game be what counts as your big Mountain West scare.
Three-peating as the conference chap would be nice, but this team is good enough to make a whole lot of noise on the big stage in a New Year’s Six game.
Let this 28-24 close call be the misfire. Let the bar be set at undefeated-or-bust. Let the horrible weather, the awful conditions, and the weather delay show you it’s possible to overcome the elements.
Let it be time to think 13-0, San Diego State.
