Missouri got rid of defensive coordinator DeMontie Cross after a miserable start to the season on that side of the ball, but the offense has been a whole lot of fun.
Purdue’s D was fine against Ohio, but couldn’t stop Lamar Jackson – like anyone can – in a loss to Louisville.
And now, this might turn out to be a bowl elimination game if everything goes according to plan.
Both teams are good enough to shock anyone on their respective schedules on the right day, but they each have way too many tough games to guarantee getting to six wins with a loss here.
But forget about larger implications. This could and should be wild and crazy fun, with Jeff Brohm’s Purdue attack starting to figure it all out, while Mizzou hasn’t had too many problems getting the machine rolling.
One Reason Why Purdue Will Win
Yeah, the Tigers changed defensive coordinators, but just how much will that matter in one week?
Missouri got ripped to shreds by Missouri State’s offense in Week One, and then last week, South Carolina was just effective enough to come through when it had to in the second half of a 31-13 win.
It’s going to be bombs away for the Boilermakers.
David Blough stepped up in the two-quarterback rotation with a brilliant 11-of-13- 235-yard, three touchdown performance against Ohio, while RB Tario Fuller took off for 142 yards and a score as part of a breathtaking first half against a team normally sound defensively.
Missouri’s biggest problem? Stopping teams from moving the chains. The Tigers are allowing offenses so far to convert 52% of their third down chances. Purdue will take that.
One Reason Why Missouri Will Win
Purdue’s defensive front isn’t generating a lick of pressure.
With just four tackles for loss and one sack in two games, the Boilermakers aren’t exactly turning up the gas on quarterbacks so far – they never got to Lamar Jackson.
The Missouri offensive line has been terrific so far in pass protection and solid enough for a ground game averaging 236 yards per outing. Give Tiger QB Drew Lock time to throw, and he’ll put up 300 yards without blinking.
For all the problems Mizzou had against South Carolina, the Gamecocks couldn’t get behind the line. They only generated two tackles for loss.
What’s Going To Happen
Is Purdue really ready to win a game like this? Absolutely.
Missouri needs to have a far better game out of Lock than it got against South Carolina, and he’ll do his part in the firefight. However, Purdue will crank up the offense at will, doing a great job in second half of controlling the game with a healthy enough balance to keep Lock on the sidelines.
