Pitt is in the midst of an awful season, starting out 1-3 with ugly losses to Penn State, Oklahoma State and Georgia Tech. But lose to Rice, and it’s time to look ahead to 2018.
The Owls were able to whack around a miserable UTEP team, and that’s been it. Getting destroyed by Stanford and Houston is one thing, but lose at home to FIU?
The 31-14 win over UTEP is the only time the Owls scored more than seven points, but Pitt doesn’t care. It needs a layup.
One Reason Why Rice Will Win
The Pitt passing game hasn’t shown up like it needs to.
It’ll throw a lot, and it’ll complete a whole bunch of short passes, but they don’t seem to go anywhere. The Panthers might be averaging 200 yards per came, but it’s taking a whole lot of work to get there. And why? There’s no ground attack to help the cause.
The Panthers were stuffed by Georgia Tech for just 37 yards and have yet to average more than four yards per carry this season. As bad as things have been for the Owls, they’re only giving up 136 yards per game on the ground.
One Reason Why Pitt Will Win
Pitt’s offense might have problems, but Rice is having issues at a whole other level.
The Owls can’t throw, can’t run, and can’t score, but other than that, everything is fine offensively.
There’s no pop or explosion from any of the playmakers, and there aren’t any long, sustainable drives. Running the ball has been like pulling teeth, failing to come up with more than 150 yards in any of the three losses. The passing game hasn’t helped, failing to hit on more than 150 yards yet this season with just one touchdown and three picks.
Pitt, score twice in the first quarter, and you’ll be fine.
What’s Going To Happen
Finally, Pitt gets to have a little fun.
Ben Dinucci and Max Browne each got to see a little time against Georgia Tech, and neither one had a whole bunch of success. Worse yet, the running game dies against Georgia Tech.
There won’t be any issues this week. The Panthers will roll without any issues, the defense will look like it can play, and for the first time all year, there will be a nice, easy breather.
