Ole Miss 45, UT Martin 23: 3 Quick Game Thoughts
Check out 3 Quick Game Thoughts on the Ole Miss win over UT Martin
Ole Miss 45, UT Martin 23
1. Shea Patterson went off. It might have been against UT Martin from the FCS world, but 489 yards and five touchdowns – with a pick – is a statement. The theme for the Ole Miss all year will be about improving and showing promise when the program can get back among the living in 2018, but before that, Patterson is rising up into superstar status. This was good, but do it against Cal, and then the national spotlight will come.
2. As good as Ole Miss was at times, the run defense was a bit mediocre. Marquis Haynes, Victor Evans, and DeMarquis Gates were dominant at times in the backfield, but UTM got 188 rushing yards out of Ladairus Galloway as part of a good day by the team on the ground. But the Skyhawks couldn’t keep up with Patterson.
3. The Rebels aren’t going to care much about ball control when Patterson is throwing five touchdown passes, but only having the ball for around 23 minutes is a problem. It won’t be an issue against a Cal team that doesn’t do much when it comes to time of possession, but at some point, it would be nice to grind out drives just to take control.
