While the college football world will be focused Big-12-wise on what Oklahoma does against Ohio State, Oklahoma State will put its traveling fun show on display in a strange road trip to a Sun Belt house.
South Alabama stunned Mississippi State and San Diego State at home last year, but started out the season with a rocky performance in a loss to Ole Miss.
It gets the national stage on Friday night at home, and if it can pull off the shocker, it’ll be one of the biggest stories of the weekend.
One Reason Why South Alabama Will Win
There might not have been a whole lot that went right for USA in the opener, but it came up with its quarterback. Cole Garvin had a nice day, throwing for 204 yards and a touchdown to go along with two scores. He’s a baller, and he’s going to have to play like it to keep up the pace.
And that means he’ll have to run. A lot.
USA has a decent backfield led by Xavier Johnson and Tra Minter, and now they’ll have to combine with Garvin to grind out drives and try getting some semblance of control over the game.
Oklahoma State might have whacked around Tulsa in a blowout, but it had problems up front slowing down the run. That was okay because …
One Reason Why Oklahoma State Will Win
Mason Rudolph was magnificent.
While Josh Rosen was doing his thing against Texas A&M, Sam Darnold and Josh Allen were struggling in their respective games. In the ongoing national battle of top-shelf pro prospects, Rudolph did his part, completing 20-of-24 passes for 303 yards and three scores against the Golden Hurricane.
South Alabama has a few nice defensive playmakers – Jeremy Reaves is one of the Sun Belt’s best defenders – but the secondary was destroyed by a good, accurate quarterbacking Shea Patterson of Ole Miss. All he did was throw for 429 yards and four scores, averaging over 12 yards per pass.
Get ready for Rudolph to go off.
What’s Going To Happen
Oklahoma State will put up over 500 yards of total offense without breathing hard.
There will be a few moments when South Alabama looks like it could rise up and do something amazing, and then Rudolph and the high-powered Cowboy offense will come up with yet another big play.
This will be when the Cowboys get to show off the balance and range of their firepower.
