Ohio State is awake now.
Beating Army and UNLV might not seem like anything special, but when Ohio State is rolling, it rises up and blasts the mediocre to bad teams without messing around.
The Rebels might have scored a few late points last week, but not before getting up 44-7 at halftime. That came after a 38-7 win over Army when all the parts were working just fine.
Does that mean the Buckeyes are going to keep this up and play like they’re supposed to, sort of like they did early on in 2014? If that’s true, they should be able to rip through Rutgers.
The Scarlet Knights aren’t as bad as you think.
They hung around with Washington for four quarters, and they gave Nebraska a tough time. They might have lost to Eastern Michigan, but … okay, they lost to Eastern Michigan.
One Reason Why Rutgers Will Win
Rutgers can play a little bit of run defense.
The defensive front hasn’t done much of anything to get into the backfield – there’s no pass rush – but it’s been solid against the run. Nebraska’s Mikale Wilbon is the first player to score a rushing touchdown this year on the Scarlet Knights.
Washington ripped through Colorado for 254 rushing yards and three scores last week, and ran for five touchdowns against Montana and two more against Fresno State. It was stuffed by Washington, coming up with just 84 yards.
The defense should be more than just a slight breeze for Ohio State to work through.
One Reason Why Ohio State Will Win
Rutgers throws too many picks.
Everything was fine against Morgan State, but QB Kyle Bolin threw two picks in each of the other three games. That can’t happen against Ohio State – it’s not like this offense needs more help.
The Buckeyes appear to have figured out the offense, getting the zone-read aspect of the attack working with both J.T. Barrett and Dwayne Hoskins each throwing well last week. Throw in Joe Burrow’s four completions, and OSU QBs combined to connect on 31-of-44 passes for 474 yards and seven touchdowns with an interception against UNLV.
Before you blow off the competition, combine that performance along with the win over Army, and those are the tune-up games the Buckeyes appear to have needed.
What’s Going To Happen
After scoring an average of 54 points a game over the last three outings against Rutgers, Ohio State will keep it all going. It’ll fire at will early, and will coast in the second half.
Rutgers will struggle to score, making matters worse with a few key turnovers turning the game into a rout – fast.
