Only the second time the two storied programs have met, it’s a rematch of the 1981 Sugar Bowl for the national title.

That’s also the last time Georgia won a national championship, and to break the long, long, long stretch without one, it might have to come up with a repeat.

And do it without Herschel Walker.

And Jacob Eason.

While the loss of Florida State QB Deondre Francois for the season was one of the biggest disasters from Week 1, Eason’s knee injury against Appalachian State might turn out to be just as large if he’s out for a significant stretch of time.

Fortunately, Jake Fromm is a big-time talent with the moxie and skill to handle the Bulldog offense – Eason is out this week, at least – but starting in a big game at Notre Dame is a whole other animal.

Especially when the team is humming.

It was just a win over Temple, and it was only Week One, but all of a sudden, Notre Dame looked like it got an adrenaline rush.

It played with a bigger spark on offense with toughness and flash, while the defense showed decent promise.

That was all well and good, but if Notre Dame is going to be known for more than whether or not Brian Kelly will keep his job, it needs to take down the Bulldogs.

One Reason Why Georgia Will Win

Okay, Notre Dame run defense. Let’s see what you’ve got.

The Georgia game plan isn’t going to be all that difficult. The coaching staff won’t make Fromm bomb away 45 times and carry the game – not when there’s a backfield like the Bulldogs own.

Appalachian State has a good, sound defense that doesn’t make a whole lot of mistakes. Georgia didn’t pound away, but it did a nice job with Nick Chubb and Sony Michel sharing the workload and coming up bigb.

And Fromm can throw a little bit, too.

As long as Fromm is able to hit the third down throws, the running game and defense will do the rest. The Dawgs shut down the Mountaineer running backs cold last week.

One Reason Why Notre Dame Will Win

Temple has a defense, and it didn’t do anything to slow down the new Fighting Irish offense.

It works faster, crisper, and with a blast to the ground game with Brandon Wimbush appearing to fit the Brian Kelly style and new attack more than DeShone Kizer did.

Wimbush took off for 106 yards and a score and threw for 184 yards and two touchdowns. The Irish tore off 422 rushing yards with big run after big run against a D that lost a slew of key parts, but was still supposed to be good enough to be more than just tissue paper.

Georgia’s defense is far, far better than Temple’s – the linebackers should put a stop to most of the long runs – but behind one of the best offensive lines in the country, the Irish should be able to move the ball.

What’s Going To Happen

Is Fromm ready? The Irish run defense will keep Chubb contained for the most part, but this might get into a wee bit of a shootout early on.

Fromm will have his moments, but he’ll also throw a few key interceptions that Wimbush and the Irish O will take advantage of.

The Georgia defense will clamp down in the second half, but it won’t be enough. America wasn’t really paying attention to what Notre Dame did to Temple, but everyone will see this.

And Brandon Wimbush will become a new college football household name.
