One thing is for absolutely certain. This will be a better game than the 80-20 North Carolina win over ODU in 2013.
This is the Monarchs’ big shot at making a splash, starting out 2-0 and getting the nasty ACC team in their own house.
Beating Albana and UMass isn’t something to do cartwheels over, but ODU got through the two games with ten-point wins, and it has the Conference USA season starting up in a few weeks. But first, with North Carolina this week and Virginia Tech to follow, the rising program gets its measuring stick games.
How far does it really have to go to become any sort of a factor?
And then there’s North Carolina.
The Tar Heels have started out with two tough losses to Cal and Louisville, with the team melting down late in both games.
With a tough Duke team up next, and dates at Georgia Tech and Notre Dame to follow, they need a win … fast.
One Reason Why North Carolina Will Win
It’s not an awful problem to have when both of the quarterbacks are playing well.
Chazz Surratt hit 12-of-14 passes for 168 yards and two scores against Louisville, but the big surprise was Brandon Harris. After an awful day against Cal, he hit 17-of-23 throws for 216 yards and a touchdown – he was throwing darts.
Old Dominion has done a slew of things right so far, but it doesn’t have a high-powered offense. With star RB Ray Lawry trying to fight through a hamstring injury, the Monarchs don’t have a whole lot of pop.
UNC has to play a full four quarters, but if it gets off to a hot start, ODU might not be able to catch up.
One Reason Why Old Dominion Will Win
If the Old Dominion passing game was ever going to work, now is the time.
With a great punting game, strong play from the offensive line, and a killer pass rush – ODU leads the nation with 15 sacks – there are just enough positive things happening to overcome the issues.
But against North Carolina, those problems have to become positives.
Awful in the win over UMass, consistency and accuracy have been a problem. However, the North Carolina secondary has been ripped to shreds so far. Granted, that was against Cal and then Lamar Jackson, but the defense has yet to show up this season.
What’s Going To Happen
North Carolina will finally be able to breathe a little bit.
It took Lamar Jackson being Lamar Jackson for Louisville to get by UNC, and Cal played a strong all-around game in the opener. Old Dominion will be a factor in the Conference USA race, but this week, the offense won’t be able to do enough to get by at home.
