Are you really ready to be a major player, NC State?

This was the team we all thought it would be, coming up with a smart, effective game on the road to beat Florida State, and now it’s Game On. Now, if this really is the team that’s good enough to win a game like that, it’s time to start believing it’s a good enough team to beat anyone and everyone on the schedule.

There’s time off to rest after this before a Thursday night game against Louisville, and then comes a run of four road games in five weeks, with Clemson in the middle.

There can’t be a misfire at home against Syracuse.

The Orange can’t seem to get their season going, alternating the two wins with two losses, but the defense hasn’t been bad, the team put up a good fight on the road against LSU, and there’s just enough hope to think this might be a bowl season with an upset or two along the way.

This might need to be one of them.

One Reason Why Syracuse Will Win

It might seem boring in a game between two teams with decent firepower, but there’s a shot the Orange can stay in the game – or change it around – with the punting game.

It’s part of the reason the Wolfpack lost to South Carolina in the opener, and it should be a problem this week with a punting game that’s averaging just 35 yards per boot and can’t do much on punt returns.

The Orange offense might be having problems, but the Sterling Hofrichter is averaging over 46 yards per boot. Considering the SU defense is seventh in the nation in coming up with third down stops, pin State deep, make it go on long drives, make it get to third down, get off the field.

One Reason Why NC State Will Win

Ryan Finley has been special.

He hasn’t received a whole lot of national love because he doesn’t put up a bazillion yards, but few quarterbacks have been more effective so far. He’s hitting 74% of his passes averaging over 300 yards per game with eight touchdowns with no picks.

He’s not forcing anything, and while Syracuse might be doing a good job on third down defense, Finley is hitting his passes to keep things moving.

The Orange D doesn’t have a pass rush. Give Finley time, and he’ll pick apart a defense. If he can handle the Florida State secondary, he can deal with Syracuse.

What’s Going To Happen

NC State will make it 4-0 in the series, but it’ll be NC State and struggle a little too much when the pressure is on.

The Orange are okay, but they aren’t going to be able to control Bradley Chubb and the Pack pass rush.

Finley and the offense will be fine, the State defense will bring it when it has to, and it’ll be effective enough when it needs to be. It’ll be underwhelming, but it won’t blow it after beating the Noles.
