Just how good is Michigan’s run defense? Is it really beefed up again and ready to handle an elite of the elite ground game?
Coaches hate playing Air Force. The blocking style from the Falcon O line always bangs up defensive linemen, the quickness and precision are hard to simulate in practices, and the team is always ridiculously well coached.
So far, everything has been fine for the Wolverines in the rebuilding process. Rolling past Florida wasn’t a problem, and while Cincinnati hung around, there really wasn’t any sort of an issue.
But Air Force is rested after rolling for 457 rushing yards in a 62-0 win over VMI two weeks ago, and now this is its shot to make a massive national splash.
Michigan survived a 31-25 dogfight the last time the Falcons came to town back in 2012, and won the 1964 opener 24-7.
But Air Force really is good enough to win this, and Michigan is still putting the pieces together from last year’s team.
One Reason Why Air Force Will Win
Air Force is more than just a funky running game.
It doesn’t have the bulk to hold up if Michigan starts banging away, and the defense has just as many new personnel issues as the Wolverines do, but this is a quick and active defensive front that’s always going to be around the ball.
Michigan has been balanced, powerful, and effective offensively in its first two games, but it also sputtered a bit for a long while against Cincinnati last week.
For the second straight game, turnovers were a problem. The two pick-sixes were the issue against Florida, and two fumbles were part of the puzzle last week against the Bearcats.
Win third downs, own the turnover battle, let the offense do the rest. The formula is there for Air Force to pull this off.
One Reason Why Michigan Will Win
The defense really is a killer.
Yeah, dealing with the Air Force option attack is a problem, and yeah, sometimes teams have a problem slowing it down, and yeah, defensive linemen always leave with sore angles and legs after facing it.
But if you can be patient, win the battles in the interior, and be disciplined at linebacker, sometimes, good defenses can shut the thing down cold.
Florida’s running game never had a chance – running for 11 yards on 27 carries – and Cincinnati also went nowhere on the ground. Air Force won’t do a thing up the middle – forget about using the fullback – and Michigan is fast enough on the outside to clean everything up.
The offense will keep pounding away with RB Ty Isaac, and Wilton Speight is just good enough to bomb away when needed on an untested Falcon secondary.
What’s Going To Happen
Michigan won’t dominate throughout, but it’ll go on a few early scoring drives, withstand a decent mini-run from the Air Force offense in the third, and clamp down against the ground game late.
Turnovers will still be an issue for the Wolverines, but they won’t be in any real danger.
