LSU (2-1) vs. Syracuse (2-1) Game Preview
Broadcast, TV, Game Time
Date: Saturday, Sept. 23rd
Game Time: 7:00 pm ET
Venue: Tiger Stadium, Baton Rouge, LA
Well that was a wee bit of a curveball.
Just when it seemed like LSU was about to make a bid to be the second-best team in the SEC – and it still might be after all is said and done – it got its doors blown off by a jacked up Mississippi State squad in a dominant 37-7 shocker.
And now comes the time to regroup.
With Syracuse this week and Troy to follow, the Tigers had better figure out the problems in a hurry with a run of three road games in four with dates at Florida, Ole Miss and Alabama around a home game against Auburn.
But that’s a walk in the park compared to what Syracuse gets to deal with.
After this date in Death Valley, there’s a trip to NC State, and with Clemson, at Miami, at Florida State, and at Louisville still on the slate.
If that Orange passing game was ever going to get rolling, this would be the time to make that happen.
One Reason Why Syracuse Will Win
So what went so wrong for LSU in Stark Vegas?
The Tigers could never get control of the game, with Nick Fitzgerald and company owning third down after third down, and dominating the time of possession along the way.
Syracuse hasn’t been as explosive as it was last season, but it’s okay on third downs, fantastic defensively at getting off the field – teams are converting a ridiculous 16% of their third down chances – and has a knack for taking the ball away.
So LSU will want to run the ball? The Orange defensive front has been fantastic so far at slowing down the run despite not doing a thing to get behind the line.
One Reason Why LSU Will Win
LSU isn’t going to give Syracuse any breaks.
There might be a few problems with their offensive consistency, but there’s no issues when it comes to being very, very careful.
The Tigers have yet to turn the ball over, and until the Mississippi State fiasco, that’s all the offense had to do.
Don’t screw up, let the defense dominate and win games. Call what happened in Starkville an aberration – this ultra-talented group is far better than it showed.
Get ready to see the pass rush unleashed from the start.
Syracuse might be doing a decent job so far defensively, but it’s not generating any semblance of a pass rush. It’s not going to this week, either.
What’s Going To Happen
Leonard Fournette and company went up to Syracuse two years ago and had to scratch and claw for a 34-24 win. It’s going to be a whole lot easier this time around at home.
After what happened last week, watch out for the LSU defense to put on a clinic. and even without Derrius Guice, the ground game will roll for well over 200 yards in an easy win. This will be over after the first quarter.
