Louisville needs to use this for more than just the easy win.
The team isn’t nearly as good as many made it out to be – at least before getting exposed by Clemson – but with this game, and then Murray State to follow, there’s a lot to work on.
The running game has to be better when Lamar Jackson isn’t rolling, the secondary needs help, and the penalties have to slow down.
Fortunately, it can all be worked on against a punchless Kent State team that doesn’t have an offense and needs to find something positive.
It’s the We Got Blown Out By Clemson game – the Golden Flashes started out the season losing 56-3. The two teams can compare scars.
One Reason Why Kent State Will Win
Slow, slow, slow. Kent State is trying to get past a whole slew of issues – with the No. 1 problem being bad at college football – but it’s not awful when it comes to grinding down the clock and taking over the pace.
Granted, the time of possession stat is skewed because teams score fast on the Golden Flash D, but the more No. 8 is kept on the sidelines, the better.
One Reason Why Louisville Will Win
Kent State doesn’t have any semblance of a passing game.
The running game isn’t anything special but the quarterbacks can’t complete passes – sort of a problem when it comes to getting a passing attack moving.
Marshall doesn’t have a brick wall of a secondary, but the Golden Flash quarterbacks were only able to complete 7-of-17 throws with a pick.
There are a few decent playmakers, but they don’t get any room to move. Louisville should be able to put this away with a few early scores, and it should be able to test some things out defensively.
All of a sudden, the UofL secondary will look terrific.
What’s Going To Happen
Jackson will have a sharp first quarter, and then it’ll be all about the supporting cast.
Kent State will find a few positive moments offensively to get on the board, but there will be way, way too many quickly-stalled drives.
