James Blackman Was Fine, But FSU Loses: NC State 27, Florida State 21

Florida State suffered a devastating ACC opener loss to NC State. The team was mediocre – it wasn’t James Blackman’s fault.

James Blackman was fine.

Thrown to the wolves against a devastating NC State defensive front, Blackman made a slew of mistakes, but it wasn’t his fault.

The 18-year-old completed 22-of-38 passes for 278 yards and a touchdown, and ran for ten yards.

The rest of the team needed to pick up the slack, and didn’t.

Auden Tate caught nine passes for 138 yards and a score, but the Noles got flagged 11 times, couldn’t figure out how to slow down NC State DE Bradley Chubb, and couldn’t get the running game going with Cam Akers only running for 56 yards.

Give NC State credit, but with so much time off to prepare and get ready for this one game, FSU wasn’t right – and now it’s screwed.

There goes the College Football Playoff without winning out with a flourish, and now the ACC title might be a tough get with Miami still to deal with, road games at Wake Forest and Duke, and a home date against Louisville all before the end of October.

Throw in the road dates at Clemson and Florida, and FSU has a whole lot of work to do.

But at least it has a good-looking young quarterback to build around.
