Iowa 44, Iowa State 41 OT: 3 Quick Game Thoughts
Check out 3 Quick Game Thoughts on Iowa’s thrilling overtime win over Iowa State.
Iowa 44, Iowa State 41 OT
1. This one’s going to really, really sting. Iowa State had the Hawkeyes down. It had them pinned deep. It had the CyHawk trophy all for itself in a potential breakthrough win for Matt Campbell, the program, and the Big 12.
Jacob Park looked great – he threw four touchdowns – David Montgomery ran for 112 yards and a score on the killer Iowa D, and Hakeem Butler played like more than a No. 2 option next to Allen Lazard.
And Iowa still won.
2. One drive turned Nathan Stanley into Iowa’s quarterback. It was a fight to get the job, and he was mainly supposed to be a caretaker for the offense while the defense and running game took over, but Stanley led the way for the long touchdown drive to tie it up – with just a wee bit of help from Akrum Wadley on a brilliant touchdown play – and then won it in OT. Stanley completed 27-of-41 passes for 333 yards and five scores – and no picks.
3. It was a rivalry game, and Iowa State might have played above its head, but Iowa has to be a wee bit concerned that it took way too much of a fight to get out alive. The Hawkeyes didn’t turn it over, but the ten penalties and problems stopping the Cyclone passing game are concerning with Penn State coming up in a few weeks.
