It’s not like the Houston Cougars have anything else to worry about.
After losing the opener against UTSA thanks to the hurricane nightmare, the Cougars get to finally kick things off and get the Major Applewhite era going.
There’s talent, there’s potential, and there’s rest – at least football-wise – for a strong team that could make some interest noise with a win over the Wildcats.
Arizona might have been Arizona defensively against Northern Arizona, but the offense blew up and looked like it’s supposed to.
But there’s still a Prove It factor when it comes these Wildcats. If they’re going to be decent this season, or even a player of any sort in the Pac-12 chase, this is the type of game they have to win.
One Reason Why Houston Will Win
Oh you Arizona defense. What would the college football season be without you?
The Wildcats had the Northern Arizona game in hand early, the defense was still a major problem allowing 377 passing yards along with two Lumberjacks running for over 100 yards. Fortunately for Rich Rodriguez’s club, the offense was unstoppable and there weren’t any major problems.
However, the Cougars come to Tucson with DT Ed Oliver leading a D that finished fourth in the nation against the run last season. This is an active, talented group that should be able to run with the Wildcat backs.
One Reason Why Arizona Will Win
Can the new Houston coaching staff fix the turnover problem?
Arizona made the NAU game a rout by being a +3 in turnover margin. As good as Houston was at times throughout last season, it had issues when it came to winning the turnover battle,
With a new quarterback stepping in for the Cougars, and a veteran O line that has to prove it can be far better in pass protection, Arizona needs to overcome its other issues by cranking up the pressure.
Houston will crank up well over 400 yards of total offense, but if the Cats are on the right side of the mistake war, they’ll be fine.
What’s Going To Happen
Is Arizona really ready to win a game like this? Is Houston going to be strong enough to start the season with a bang?
If it’s possible, yes and yes.
The Cougar offense will rumble without a problem on the still-pourous Arizona D, while Oliver and the Houston defense will take care of the run just enough to make the Wildcats a passing team
That’s when the problems will start.
Arizona really is better than last season, but it’s not going to matter.
