It’s amazing how this is all working out for Florida again.
The Gators just aren’t that good, but they’re 2-0 in conference play thanks to a miraculous win over Tennessee and a truly puzzling victory against Kentucky. They could and probably should be 0-3, but no matter how it looks, this team finds a way to keep on winning SEC East games.
How it looked for Vanderbilt last week against Alabama was embarrassing.
On the national stage, and with the world thinking there might be an outside shot of pulling off something huge, reality kicked in big-time in as one-sidded 59-0 rout that was every bit as dominant as the final score.
But beat Florida in Gainesville, and hopes for a stunning SEC East championship season are back on. If the Gators win, then they might be one win against Georgia away from making it three straight trips to the SEC Championship.
As impressive as Florida’s now-31 game winning streak over Kentucky might be, its 25-1 record against Vanderbilt in the last 26 is almost as amazing. The lone loss was in Gainesville in 2013.
One Reason Why Vanderbilt Will Win
The Alabama game was an aberration – the Vanderbilt defense really is solid.
The Gators aren’t able to move the ball – they have the fourth-worst O in the country in first downs – and they don’t have enough pop overall. Other than than two large catches by Tyrie Cleveland, there isn’t enough to the passing game to scare a strong group of Commodore defensive backs.
Fourth in the nation in pass efficiency defense, Vandy is dominating when it’s not playing the Crimson Tide – especially on third downs.
The Commodores are allowing offenses to convert just 26% of their third down chances, and Florida doesn’t move the chains.
One Reason Why Florida Will Win
With the coaching staff looking for a spark, and with Del Rio coming off the bench and leading the way to the win over Kentucky, the chance has been made with Feleipe Franks sitting down. Del Rio is at least a change, even if the Gators don’t have a whole slew of big-time playmakers to help him out.
The defense is still a factor, doing a nice job of getting to the quarterback and coming up large at times on third downs. The secondary is talented, the sacks are there in key moments, and even with all the problems, this defense has been able to rise up when needed over the last two games.
What’s Going To Happen
You just can’t kill this Florida team.
Just like you don’t mess with a streak when it comes to Florida finding ways to get by Kentucky, the Gators tend to figure out how to slip by Vanderbilt.
The Commodore defense will go back to being the Commodore defense, but Florida PK Eddy Pineiro will hit four field goals and bail out an offense that’ll move, but will stall way too often.
