Oh, so there you are, Florida State.
After a few weeks off after the tough and painful loss to Alabama, the Seminoles missed out on the desperately needed warm-up games and get thrown right into the ACC fire against a team that has to come up with a big, splashy win to get its season kickstarted.
NC State has gotten past the shocker to South Carolina – and it was a bit of a stunner – with wins over Marshall and Furman, but the team hasn’t been quite as dominant as expected. Beat the Noles, and with home dates with Syracuse and Louisville to follow, and a battle at Pitt after that, there’s a chance to go on a run with a big upset win in Tallahassee.
With a trip to face a nasty-looking Wake Forest up next, and then the shifted date with Miami, and and then a trip to deal with a now-unbeaten Duke, and then Louisville, with road games at Clemson and Florida left to go, FSU can’t afford a slip.
One Reason Why NC State Will Win
It’s not just that Florida State is starting its season over after getting so much time off, but those missed games didn’t give new starting quarterback James Blackman a chance to get his feet wet.
Considering the NC State run defense has been a rock so far – allowing fewer than 270 total rushing yards so far – the great defensive front should load up on the FSU ground game and make the new guy win this.
The pass rush hasn’t been up to expectations yet, but the Wolfpack defense forces turnovers and has only allowed one touchdown on the ground.
Blackman, this is going to be on you.
One Reason Why Florida State Will Win
NC State has been good, but it hasn’t exactly been clicking in all phases.
As good as the defense has been, it’s been a bit leaky on third downs, the special teams had a few breakdowns in the opener against South Carolina, and the passing game has yet to open anything up.
This has been a dink-and-dunk Wolfpack offense – that’s not going to fly against the ultra-athletic FSU defense and elite secondary.
It’s been lost over time, but the Seminoles still might be the second-best team in the country, or in the top five. The defense should be ready to make a big statement, and the Pack might not have the pop to do anything about it.
What’s Going To Happen
Blackman will be more than good enough.
The FSU ground game won’t be great, and Blackman won’t bomb away, but he’ll be just efficient enough to keep the chains moving.
Both defenses will be good enough to keep the score down, but at home, the Seminoles will come up with the big stops needed in the second half.
