It’s Tiger on Tiger action for two of the season’s most promising teams. While the loser will still be a player in its conference race – if not win it – the winner will be propelled into true College Football Playoff challenger status.
Okay 2017 Clemson. Here’s your chance to prove to the world that you’re reloaded and ready for another run to the College Football Playoff and, possibly, the national title.
Florida State lost its star quarterback, Louisville looked awful, NC State lost, and the ACC, as a whole, was just okay.
The league is there for the taking.
Beating Kent State 56-3 doesn’t mean it’s time to put the Tigers in Atlanta quite yet, but it was a perfect start for a team that needed the one game to get the new guys some work.
Okay, 2017 Auburn. Here’s your chance to prove to the. world that the SEC isn’t just the Alabama Invitational.
The SEC had a great opening weekend, but Auburn was right there in terms of impressive performances. Don’t blow off the win over Georgia Southern – that’s a dangerous option offense the Tigers stomped all over.
One Reason Why Auburn Will Win
The AU Tiger defense was amazing against Georgia Southern with the run defense swarming all over everything the attack tried to do.
Get ready for Clemson to be under a whole lot of pressure all game long.
The ACC Tigers had few problems showing off the offense against Kent State – QB Kelly Bryant had 19 days to operate. That’s not happening against the Auburn D that camped out in the Georgia Southern backfield and stopped the option before it could get started.
On the other side, Jarrett Stidham was good enough, hitting 14-of-24 passes for 185 yards and two scores with a pick, but it was the running game that took over with 351 yards and three scores. The ground attack might not rock in Death Valley, but unlike last year in the 19-13 loss, Auburn can balance things out a bit.
One Reason Why Clemson Will Win
Kelly Bryant is the real deal.
The common line has been, “no one expects Bryant to be Deshaun Watson …,” but why not? He’s an elite talent with the speed to tear off 77 yards and a score last week, and he was razor-sharp hitting 16-of-22 passes for 236 yards and a touchdown with a pick.
The offense will be fine, even under pressure, but it’s the defensive front that should be the difference. Even with Kamryn Pettway expected to be back after being suspended for the opener, mo one’s running on this line and these tackles. Kent State was able to come up with 119 yards on the ground, but most came from QB Nick Holley – the running backs did absolutely nothing.
As long as Bryant isn’t making any major mistakes – he gave up one pick against the Golden Flashes – and the defense can get Auburn’s fast offense off the field in a hurry, all should be fine.
What’s Going To Happen
It stops here. It’s not going to happen anymore when Auburn plays LSU, and it’s not going to happen this week. The unfunny “the Tigers will win” line gets retired now.
But the Tigers really will win.
Auburn will be strong, but the running game will be held up by the Clemson interior and swarming linebackers. Bryant will have his misfires, and it’ll take a little while to get comfortable, but the game will change when he starts taking off.
It’ll be a strong performance from both teams with the defenses taking over for long stretches. It won’t be the shootout many will predict, but at home, Clemson will find a way to survive late by taking advantage of good field position.
In this game, time of possession will matter. Clemson didn’t own it last week, but it will against the Tigers – the other ones.
