It’s the national showcase game in a week of light games. And we might get it again.
Considering Virginia Tech has to go to Miami, this isn’t necessarily Round One – with the two teams on the way to a rematch of the 2016 ACC Championship in the 2017 title game – but these might just be the two best teams in the ACC.
Virginia Tech was supposed to need some time to rebuild. Could the offense keep on rolling with a freshman quarterback? Yup – Josh Jackson has been incredible.
Could the defense return with a strong run? Yup – the D has pitched two shutouts and held down West Virginia when it had to, and stopped East Carolina.
Is this the moment when the Hokies can rise up and become the ACC’s new big star?
This is it. Win this, and Virginia is in the top three in all of the rankings with the bar moved up to College Football Playoff.
But win, and there might be that rematch in a few months.
Clemson might have been sluggish against Boston College, but it still woke up and won 34-7. Now comes the run of tough games the Tigers should win – Wake Forest, at Syracuse, Georgia Tech, at NC State – but will have to fight really, really hard to get through before dealing with Florida State.
One Reason Why Clemson Will Win
The defensive front isn’t allowing a thing against the run.
The Tigers gave up their first rushing touchdown of the season in the win over Boston College, and they’re only allowing 2.5 yards per carry thanks to a front seven that’s living in the backfield.
The Auburn showcase was what everyone saw, but the Tigers were able to get to Lamar Jackson and Louisville, too. With 32 tackles for loss on the season, this group is always flying around, always making things happen at 1,000 miles per hour.
On the other side, the Clemson ground game found another gear when it needed to against BC. Kelly Bryant continues to be a solid rushing option – taking off for 106 yards and two scores – and Travis Etienne is hitting the big plays with 113 yards and two scores on just nine carries.
The one good running game Virginia Tech saw – West Virginia’s – rumbled for 221 yards.
One Reason Why Virginia Tech Will Win
Josh Jackson has been brilliant. He might be a freshman, but he’s playing like a seasoned veteran.
The X factor and concern coming into the season might have even improved the position after Jerod Evans left early, connecting on 65% of his passes for 1,127 yards and 11 touchdowns with just one pick in the four games. He’s not running as much, but he came up with 101 yards and a score in the opener against West Virginia.
But against this Clemson defensive front, he’s going to need a whole lot of help. He’s going to get it from his line.
The Hokies have allowed just four sacks so far with a line that’s been air-tight – just like the rest of the team.
Virginia Tech doesn’t get hit with penalties, and it’s 15th in the nation in turnover margin.
The Hokies won’t beat themselves.
What’s Going To Happen
It’s going to be one of those games when the favorite does its part, but the upstart underdog looks fantastic in defeat.
The atmosphere will be off-the-charts, and the Hokie defense will swarm all over the Clemson backfield for long stretches, but the Tiger D will step up its game to another level.
It’s not going to be like Alabama-Vanderbilt – when Alabama was ticked off after its previous performance against Colorado State and came into Nashville fully-focused – but Clemson’s bad performance against Boston College will matter.
This will be the Clemson that can take its game to another level, but Virginia Tech will show that it’s good enough to still be thought of as a true ACC title contender.
