This could still be dangerous.
This is the moment when the Cougars have to kickstart their season. They already lost the big nationally televised game and dropped the rivalry war that matters more than any other game on the slate. So what’s left?
How about screwing up someone’s College Football Playoff dream?
BYU has been a big, dull, dud to start the season, sputtering out of the gate against Portland State, getting embarrassed by LSU, and last week, failing to do much of anything in a 19-13 loss to Utah that was a whole lot worse than the final score.
But none of that matters if it can rise up and rock at home against Wisconsin.
The Badgers might be 2-0, but they struggled early against Utah State, made way too many mistakes against Florida Atlantic, and suffered injuries on both lines while still needing to find more early consistency to the offense.
Yes, yes, yes, Bucky won both games in easy blowouts, but Utah State and FAU don’t have BYU’s defense.
Just the third time the two teams have played, BYU won in 1980, but the Badgers rolled in 2013. Considering this is one of Wisconsin’s only tough road games – if you want to count Nebraska, Indiana and Minnesota as nasty – this meeting means more.
One Reason Why BYU Will Win
The defense has done its job.
It’s not the BYU defensive front’s fault the season has started out so blah. The run defense dominated Utah’s running backs last week, and considering there wasn’t much support from the other side of the ball, held up reasonably well against LSU’s Derrius Guice.
As good as Wisconsin has been on the ground over the first two games, if the BYU linebackers can somehow keep Jonathan Taylor and the Badger backs in check, then the game is on QB Alex Hornibrook.
The Badger QB has been fine. He’s just accurate enough to not royally screw things up, but he also has a noodle for an arm and does nothing under pressure. If the Cougars were every going to get into the backfield – they haven’t all year – this would be the time.
One Reason Why Wisconsin Will Win
BYU’s offense has been miserable.
It can’t run, it can’t throw, and it can’t score. Other than that, everything is fine.
The Cougars are getting killed up front, with the running game only averaging 76 yards per game for an attack that doesn’t know how to move the chains. BYU hangs on to the ball for just over 25 minutes a game, and now it’s dealing with the ultimate time of possession team.
The Badgers have owned the clock for almost 36 minutes.a game, and they’ve got the formula down now. Taylor was a breakout star agains FAU with 223 rushing yards and three scores, Chris James fired up 101 yards, and when absolutely needed, Hornibrook can hit the third down throw.
Score early on a few grinding drives, make BYU start throwing, get out of Provo with a win.
What’s Going To Happen
BYU is way, way overdue for a decent performance offensively, but it’s not going to happen this week.
Fortunately for the Cougars, the defense will keep the game interesting well into the second half as the Badgers sputter and cough on drive after drive. However, BYU’s offense will be its ugly self just when it needs to rise up and take advantage of its chances.
This will be the Rafael Gaglianone game. The Badger kicker will nail four field goals to bail the offense out in a grinding, tough win.
