One Reason Why Utah State Will Win

Beau Hoge.

The BYU offense has been a disaster with no running game and points, ranking second-to-last in college football averaging just 9.8 points per game. It’s not going to help not having veteran QB Tanner Mangum to try jump-starting the attack now that the toughest part of the schedule is over.

Hoge gave it a shot against Wisconsin with a few nice plays, but he only completed 11-of-20 passes for 111 yards with two picks. Utah State doesn’t have the Badgers’ defense, but it should be able to bother the inexperienced passer while not having to sell out to stuff the run.

Utah State might have had a rough start to the year, but it has a passing game and it’s able to capitalize on mistakes with six fumble recoveries and three interceptions.

One Reason Why BYU Will Win

Kent Myers might be a solid, dangerous veteran quarterback, but he’s also giving up way too many interceptions with at least one in each game and three in the loss to the Badgers.

He was able to hit Idaho State and San Jose State hard for big numbers, but the BYU defense is a different animal.

With time off to prepare, the terrific BYU linebacking corps should be able to handle – and be ready for – the Utah State zone-read offense that needs to run to win.

In the two wins, Utah State ran wild. In the two losses, it went nowhere. LSU and Wisconsin were able to run well against the Cougars, but Utah State doesn’t have that kind of power. BYU’s veteran linebacker should be able to handle the quickness.

What’s Going To Happen

BYU’s offense isn’t going to start exploding, but the time off will do wonders. Hoge will have plenty of time to get ready, the defense should be able to handle what Utah State likes to do, and this should be a decent step back to respectability.

Even if BYU still doesn’t look the part of anything special, it’s going to be a win. The desperate team will take it.
