It’s been a rough ride for Virginia football.
Bronco Mendenhall was a hire out of left field – a.k.a. Provo – but almost no one criticized the move for Virginia. But was it right for Mendenhall after all the success at BYU?
Virginia doesn’t have the history, the recruiting, or the infrastructure to dominate the ACC, but all of a sudden, with one big road win, the program looks like it might become a factor sooner than later in the rebuilding process.
Beating Boise State isn’t like getting by Florida State, Clemson or Miami, but for a Cavalier team that hasn’t known a whole lot of success for a long while, this was massive.
Kurt Benkert has turned into the exact type of cool, accurate passing quarterback the team needs, hitting 19-of-29 passes for 273 yards and three scores, but in Boise, it was the defense that got the job done keeping the Broncos to 30 yards on just 24 carries.
And now there’s hope. At 3-1, there’s a real shot to dream about going bowling with Boston College and Pitt winnable games, and needing to come up with an upset or three along the way.
But for now, Bronco has his big moment, and so does Virginia.
