For Notre Dame and BYU, the dream is to finish with just one loss – or go unbeaten – and get into the College Football Playoff. Beyond that, they’re going to have to battle for a bowl spot.
Notre Dame is tied into the ACC system, while BYU is truly on its own. Of course someone will find a way to take the Cougars, but that’ll only happen if all the conferences can’t fill in their bowl ties.
Army is locked into the Armed Forces Bowl vs. the Big Ten, while there’s no set bowl tie-in for Massachusetts.

BYU vs. Colorado State
– BYU currently has no direct bowl tie in 2017 if it doesn’t get into the College Football Playoff.
Notre Dame vs. Auburn
– Notre Dame can take one of the ACC’s bowl spots starting with the Camping World Bowl. Must be within one overall win over the available ACC team with the best overall record to take one of the ACC’s spots.
