Boise State Blew It. The Big Thought: Virginia 42, Boise State 23
It was the chance to make everything right and start to make a big national statement – and Boise State blew it.
Virginia 42, Boise State 23
Virginia at Boise State
Prediction: Boise State 26, Virginia 20
Line: Boise State -13.5, o/u: 53
Everything was supposed to go back to normal for Boise State.
After a strange and disappointing choke at Washington State, the Broncos bounced back with a workmanlike win over New Mexico and a winnable game over a mediocre ACC team at home to follow.
Star QB Brett Rypien was cleared to play, the program is known for winning non-conference home games, and the hopes to be in the New Year’s Six mix were about to build back up with BYU and San Diego State up next to make a splashy statement.
And now, that’s all gone.
There was nothing fluky about this – Boise State got flat-out whacked.
Rypien wasn’t miserable – completing 24-of-42 passes for 285 yard and a pick – but the offensive line was a disaster for the ground game.
Virginia was the more physical team, Boise State came up with just 30 yards rushing, and now the aura of invincibility on the blue turn is totally gone.
Oh sure, beat San Diego State and Wyoming in a few weeks and the Mountain West title is there for the taking, but Boise State football is supposed to be a lot more than that.
It’s supposed to be the big bad boy Group of Fiver that no one wants to face. It’s supposed to set the standard for consistent greatness.
Now it just appears to be just another good team. But let this be the moment that Bryan Harsin and the program uses as a rallying point.
Let this be a low point.
