It’s pecking order time. The loser all but gets the boot off the SEC West island, while the winner will likely be the second-best team in the division.
But for one team, it needs to rebound in a huge hurry.
If Mississippi State was trying to make some sort of statement in the race to be the No. 2 team in the SEC, it failed miserably in last week’s loss at Georgia.
But being deep in the SEC West race wouldn’t be a bad thing by following that up with a huge road win.
The Bulldogs have won two of the last three games in the series with Auburn, but these Tigers are on a roll coming off a 51-14 blasting of Missouri.
In terms of the SEC West race, lose to MSU, and there’s going to be trouble with three straight road games following next week’s date with Ole Miss, and with Georgia and Alabama to follow.
One Reason Why Mississippi State Will Win
After being shut down by Georgia, will the Mississippi State running game get going again?
The Bulldogs ripped through LSU and others with more than just QB Nick Fitzgerald, and they actually weren’t all that awful against Georgia, either – it was the passing game that didn’t work.
The pass protection has been stellar so far – Fitzgerald will get the time to work. Auburn’s secondary hasn’t been pushed too hard quite yet, with Missouri doing some decent things in the blowout, but not quite clicking.
As long as Fitzgerald is able to hit his third down throws – big problem against Georgia – the offense will click. However …
One Reason Why Auburn Will Win
The Auburn run defense has been a bear.
Georgia Southern’s option attack went nowhere. Clemson ran for just 96 yards, and Missouri came up with the season high against this group of just 124.
The Tigers are all about attacking plays before they get started, with 33 tackles for loss behind the line. Throw in a sure-tackling group of defensive backs, and the big running plays haven’t been there.
Mississippi State needs those big running plays.
Georgia gave up one big run last week, a few medium ones, and a whole lot of early stops – and that was without getting into the backfield.
Auburn will get in the backfield.
What’s Going To Happen
Mississippi State will get back in the swing of things with the offense, but it won’t be enough.
No, Auburn’s offensive dominance of last week won’t continue – there won’t be the same balance – and with Kamryn Pettway likely back, Kerryon Johnson won’t run for five touchdowns like he did against Mizzou. But Jarrett Stidham will be steady, the ground game will be serviceable, and the defense will do its part to keep Fitzgerald under wraps.
It won’t be a shootout, and it won’t be pretty, but for Auburn, it’ll be effective.
