In 1903, Vanderbilt hosted Alabama to kick off the season, and came away with a 30-0 win.
The Commodores also beat the Crimson Tide in 1956 – winning 32-7 in an easy blowout. Since then, it’s been all Alabama, with only a hiccup in 1984 the only winning moment for Vandy.
But now, there might actually be a little bit of hope.
Alabama might be the No. 1 team in the country, and it might be beyond loaded compared to the Commodores, but this could be a more dangerous fight than anyone might have thought before the season.
Vandy has allowed just 13 points in the first three games, it held Kansas State to a dead stop in a 14-7 win, and now the defense might be just good enough to pull off the shocker.
Or it could be just another day for an Alabama program used to being everyone else’s big moment.
One Reason Why Alabama Will Win
The Vanderbilt running game hasn’t exactly found its groove yet.
QB Kyle Shurmur might be coming through when needed, and the defense has been fantastic, but RB Ralph Webb and company don’t have anywhere to move.
The Commodores were held to just 65 yards on the ground against Kansas State, and didn’t go anywhere against Middle Tennessee with just 71 yards.
Alabama isn’t the team to face when you’re trying to figure out your ground game woes.
This might not be the dominant force in the backfield that last year’s Crimson Tide defense was, but it’s still not giving up a thing against the run. If Bama is fully focused, Vanderbilt’s offensive line won’t generate any sort of a push.
One Reason Why Vanderbilt Will Win
No one has thrown a lick so far on the Commodore secondary – Vandy is No. 1 in the nation in pass defense, No. 1 in total defense, and No. 1 in scoring defense.
And before dogging the schedule, Middle Tennessee and Kansas State will go bowling.
It’s all happening from a terror of a pass rush that’s coming from all sides and camping out behind the line. Charles Wright has been a force, with six sacks on the year as a part of the devastating front line.
The D has to come up with the game of the program’s life, Shurmur has to hit his third down throws, and the team has to get into the fourth quarter with the game still on the line.
Vandy can do that.
What’s Going To Happen
As bad as the Kansas State offense was against Vanderbilt last week, QB Jesse Ertz still ran for 126 yards and a score. Alabama QB Jalen Hurts should be able to take off when he needs to, but the rest of the parts will be working, too.
Chad Kelly, Deshaun Watson, Johnny Manziel, Ezekiel Elliott – whenever Alabama has had problems, it’s been when the the other team has high-end offensive talent. That’s not Vanderbilt.
Really? You want to get into a defensive slugfest with Alabama? Good luck with that.
