No pressure, new guy. Just win in the home opener against Maryland.
And every other game, too. For the rest of your life.
That’s where the bar is set for Tom Herman, as he steps into the heater of a Texas team with the expectations in place to win right away, and do it impressively.
And that’s why Maryland might be the perfect team to come in and start things off.
Okay, so getting a true layup like San Jose State – who’s up next – would be even better, but the Terps will be a good measuring stick to see just how far these Longhorns have to go – if at all – to be great again.
With a date at USC coming up two weeks after this, Herman’s team had better be fantastic, and fast.
But Maryland is rising, too.
With a great recruiting class, a terrific young head man in D.J. Durkin, and the growing hope that maybe, just maybe, this is going to be the moment when the Terps show that they’ve arrived.
First, though, they have to score.
Maryland and Texas have played three times, with the last showdown a 42-0 Longhorn win in the 1978 Sun Bowl. Texas won the other times, too, beating the Terps by a combined score of 102-0.
One Reason Why Maryland Will Win
While the spotlight might be on the Maryland quarterback situation – and with Texas having to prepare for three different options – the ground game might just be good enough to take over early on.
Yeah, it’s a new year with a new coaching staff and a whole lot of excitement, but these are still the same Texas players who couldn’t take a lick last season.
Sure, they’re going to come out jacked up, and they’re going to be emotional, but the Longhorns also might be able to be smashed in the mouth a bit.
No one’s going to confuse the Maryland running game with Wisconsin’s, but the line is going to be a plus early on, and the Terp running backs are outstanding. It’s possible for the O to take the Longhorn crowd out of the game early with a few big drives.
One Reason Why Texas Will Win
The Longhorns have an offensive line, too.
Time of possession was a massive problem for the Terps throughout last season – giving up around five minutes per game – and while it’ll be tempting for Texas to go up-tempo and get things moving in a hurry, it could be easier to simply line up and go smashmouth.
Top running back option Chris Warren continues to try getting over a slew of injuries, but no matter who’s carrying the mail, NFL blockers Connor Williams and Zach Shackelford should settle the game down in a hurry.
Meanwhile, with the coaching staff settling on Shane Buechele as the starting quarterback – not a total shocker, and not set in stone, but it’s a step – the offense is loaded with veterans. The passing game will work, too.
What’s Going To Happen
Maryland has too much experience to get its doors blown off. Texas will win thanks to a balanced offense that’ll come through with the ground game when it absolutely has to, but it won’t be the dominant debut many Longhorn fans might be hoping for.
There won’t be any reason to panic. The Terps are pretty good, too.
