Texas A&M (0-0 vs. UCLA (0-0) Game Preview

There’s a hurricane.

Texas A&M can be forgiven if its collective attention isn’t 100% fully focused on a historic trip to Pasadena and the Rose Bowl for a whale of a showdown to kick off its 2017 season.

Obviously, all of the nightmares produced by Harvey are affecting the entire area area of East-Central Texas, but the Aggies are still going to play, and they still need to win this game.

There’s Josh Rosen.

The ultra-talented, ultra-brash quarterback made plenty of noise a few weeks ago with his comments about how going to school as a full-time college student doesn’t quite mesh with being a full-time college football player – to get the gist of his point.

And now he’s the focus. He’s the star of the nationally televised show on Sunday night, and it’s his job to produce in a big, big way after making himself a talking point during a sports news cycle.

Considering the controversy – with that term used very, very loosely – and eyes of the NFL scouts wanting to see how he can perform after coming back from a shoulder injury,

There’s a coaching hot seat issue.

Forgetting the buyouts it would take to get rid of UCLA’s Jim Mora Jr. and Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin, the loser of this game will have to deal with a giant bag of scrutiny until he wins another big game.

But beyond everything that’s happening in the periphery, the game itself should be fantastic – at least that’s the hope after Texas A&M won last year’s thriller to open up the season.

One Reason Why Texas A&M Will Win

While the Aggies are known for their flash and dash, they should be able to get tough up front and run the ball a bit.

Even with Christian Kirk back, the A&M receiving corps is a bit green, and the quarterback situation won’t be settled even after the pecking order is set – at least in pencil. That’s fine. Get ready for the ground-and-pound Aggies – at least for this week.

The fantastic 1-2 rushing punch of Trayveon Williams and Keith Ford might just take over the game right away, working behind a strong line that has the interior to get nasty when it has to.

Keep Rosen off the field with long, sustained drives, and the Aggie O will do its job.

One Reason Why UCLA Will Win

While Texas A&M defensive coordinator John Chavis will always dial up the pressure, and the decent prospects and athletes are waiting to show what they can do on the Aggie defensive front, UCLA and Rosen don’t have to deal with Myles Garrett or Daeshon Hall.

That’s a good thing.

Even with them, the Aggie run defense wasn’t anything amazing. UCLA didn’t even have a sliver of a ground attack last season, but if there’s going to be a chance at getting it going to take the pressure off Rosen, this wouldn’t be a bad game to try establishing a more physical attitude.

And if that doesn’t work, there’s always Rosen there to bomb away on an A&M secondary that gets just about everyone back, but stunk it up last season.

What’s Going To Happen

It’ll be every bit as good as could possibly be hoped for.

The Texas A&M offense will look outstanding at times. The defense will play fast, and a pass rush will emerge as the game goes on.

But Rosen will be magnificent.

With the pressure on, he’ll rise up and rock, making this his game and becoming the talk of the sports world on Monday morning – but for his arm, not his opinions.

It’ll turn out to be one of the best and most thrilling games of the weekend, with Rosen and Bruins – unlike last year – coming through late to pull it off.
